Whenever I plan a quick weekend escape from Hong Kong to Shenzhen, skipping the massive crowds at Lo Wu is always my top priority. That's why Shenzhen Bay Port has become my absolute favourite border crossing! Thanks to its highly efficient "co-location" arrangement (一地兩檢) and the newly expanded facial recognition clearance, getting through immigration is an absolute breeze.

Shenzhen Bay Port Opening Hours & Peak Times

Unlike some 24-hour crossings, the standard Shenzhen Bay Port opening hours run daily from 6:30 AM to 12:00 Midnight. I usually aim to cross by 11:00 PM just to be safe and avoid any last-minute stress.

Shenzhen Bay Port Crowd Control: Beating the Queues

Waiting in long queues can definitely ruin the holiday mood. Before I leave home, I always check the Hong Kong Immigration Department mobile app. Under the "Estimated Waiting Times" section, you can see real-time passenger flow at Shenzhen Bay Port. Green means you'll breeze through in under 15 minutes, orange is a 15-30 minute wait, and red means you should brace yourself for over 30 minutes.

Shenzhen Bay Port Facial Recognition Clearance

I absolutely love the new "Document-Free" Facial Recognition Clearance (刷臉通關). It was initially launched at Shenzhen Bay Port and Gongbei Port back in November 2024. Because it was such a massive time-saver, authorities officially expanded this smart border crossing to Lo Wu, Liantang, Futian, and the HZMB ports on November 5, 2025!

Who is Eligible?

• Hong Kong and Macao residents aged 14 or above holding a valid Mainland Travel Permit (Home Return Permit).
• Mainland residents holding valid travel permits with multiple-entry endorsements (such as for family visits, business, or talent schemes).
• You must consent to having your facial and fingerprint biometrics collected for border inspection.

How to Apply?

If you meet the criteria, simply take your Home Return Permit to the express clearance collection points at the port to register. Here is the best part: if you are a Hong Konger who already uses the mainland's automated e-channels, you don't even need to re-apply!

Step-by-Step Usage

1. Walk up to the designated "Document-Free" (免出示證件) lane.
2. Look straight into the camera at the entrance and adjust your footing so the camera can scan your face.
3. Verify your identity details on the screen.
4. Once the first gate opens, step inside.
5. The system will double-check your facial features and fingerprints. Once cleared, the exit gate swings open, and you're officially through in seconds!

The Clearance Process

Just bring your HKID and Home Return Permit (or valid passport/visa). Since Shenzhen Bay Port operates a "co-location" (一地兩檢) arrangement, both Hong Kong and Mainland immigration counters are housed under one roof. Once you hop off your bus at the terminal, you just walk through a single building to complete both your exit and entry procedures. It’s incredibly straightforward!

To travel like a pro, knowing what's inside the port is a total game-changer! Shenzhen Bay Port has recently upgraded its internal and surrounding facilities to make the border-crossing experience much smoother. As someone who always needs to double-check my phone battery before a trip, here are the practical amenities you can rely on:

• Restrooms: Clean and easily accessible washrooms are located on both the Hong Kong and Shenzhen sides of the immigration halls. The signs have recently been updated with clear English and Traditional Chinese, so you won't have trouble finding them.

• Currency Exchange & ATMs: Need some last-minute RMB cash? Right after clearing Shenzhen customs, you'll spot reliable currency exchange counters and ATMs. It’s absolutely perfect if you haven't linked your digital wallets yet or just want some spare physical cash.

• Convenience Stores: Whether you need a quick bottle of water, a SIM card, or a snack to keep your energy up, there are convenience stores stationed just outside the Shenzhen exit before you reach the bus and taxi stands.

• Power Bank Rentals & Free Wi-Fi: This is my favourite life-saver! The port area now features upgraded 5G coverage and free public Wi-Fi. If your phone battery is dying, you can easily rent a portable power bank right at the port. It makes loading up your Alipay/WeChat Pay or ordering a DiDi (滴滴) an absolute breeze as soon as you step out!

• Accessibility Services: For those travelling with elderly family members or heavy luggage, the port provides wheelchair services, luggage carts, and recently upgraded vertical elevators for extra convenience.

Important Things to Note Before Travelling

• Restricted Area: The Hong Kong side of Shenzhen Bay Port is a restricted area. Cross-boundary travellers must hold valid travel documents, while non-travellers need a valid Closed Area Permit.
• Road Closures: The roads leading to the port close about 30 minutes before the checkpoint ceases operation. Make sure you leave plenty of time to get there!
• Bad Weather: The port is connected by the Shenzhen Bay Bridge. If severe weather hits (like a typhoon), the bridge and public transport might close. I always check the Transport Department's latest announcements during typhoon season.

🚌 Franchised Buses

Taking a franchised bus from the New Territories is by far the cheapest way to travel. Please note that fares have been updated for 2026, with the KMB B2 costing HK$15.8

🚐 Green Minibus

Route 618 from Tin Shui Wai runs very frequently (every 5 to 8 minutes) and costs around HK$12. However, minibuses don't have luggage racks. If I'm carrying a suitcase for a shopping spree, I always stick to the larger franchised buses!

🚆 MTR Transfer

There is no direct MTR station at the Hong Kong side of Shenzhen Bay Port. My go-to method is taking the MTR Tuen Ma Line to Tuen Mun, Tin Shui Wai, or Yuen Long stations, and then swapping to one of the B-series buses mentioned above.

🚕 Taxis

Both Red (Urban) and Green (New Territories) taxis can drop you off or pick you up right at the Public Transport Interchange. It's a great option if you're travelling with a group of friends.

🚍 Cross-Boundary Coaches

If I'm travelling straight from Hong Kong Island or Kowloon, jumping on a cross-boundary bus is the most direct choice.

Note: Bus frequencies vary throughout the day, typically running from around 07:45 AM to 21:40 PM. Please check with operators for exact timings.

🚗 Cross-Boundary Hire Cars

For a premium, point-to-point ride, you can book a licensed cross-boundary hire car. They will whisk you from Hong Kong straight into Shenzhen! Just look for the "Cross Boundary Hire Car" identification label on the windscreen and the rear of the vehicle to ensure it's a legal, government-approved service.

🚙 Private Cars

Thinking of driving? Keep in mind that the port area is a restricted zone. You must hold an Approval Notice from the Guangdong Public Security Bureau AND a valid "Closed Road Permit" from the Hong Kong Transport Department. Without these permits, you'll be forced to turn back at the Ha Tsuen Interchange.

#1 MixC World (萬象天地)

This is arguably the "big brother" of shopping malls in Nanshan. Spanning 220,000 square metres, it's packed with trendy cafes, domestic and global brands, and of course, our beloved HeyTea! Don't leave without taking a photo with the giant "Bubblecoat Elephant" art installation at the main entrance.

#2 Splendid China • Folk Culture Villages (錦繡中華)

I highly recommend catching the traditional ethnic performances in the afternoon—it's a brilliant way to immerse yourself in Chinese history.
