We stayed at the hotel as it was half way between our drive from Hilton head to Atlanta and looked like it would be a fun historic property to stay at. It was. We booked a 1 King Bed Suite, and were given a room on the corner of N Jackson and W Lamar Streets on the 2nd floor. Despite facing the two fairly busy roads, we didn't notice any traffic noise. We were able to park right outside the hotel although there was dedicated parking around the corner. The room was spacious with high ceilings and traditional furniture. The bed was massive and quite high off the floor for which small steps were provided although not needed. First time we have seen this! The bathroom was fine with what appeared to be all the original features and flooring. The windows had shutters rather than curtains which were fine as they could be partially opened to let in light but not the full blast of the sun. Check-in and out were friendly and professional (Vicki was very welcoming). The let down for us was the service at Rosemary & Thyme. The food was excellent and we enjoyed every course but the service ruined the overall experience. There were 4 staff serving the restaurant and bar area. We were seated and given menus and water. We were then ignored. After about 20 minutes we were tired of waiting and noticed that the staff were chatting in the corner, so had to walk over and interrupt them to order drinks. When the drinks arrived we had to ask again to place our food order. We also ordered two glasses of wine as we had no confidence anyone would be back. The food when it did arrive was excellent (the best we can remember having in the US) but half way through eating our entrees we were asked if we wanted dessert and were given menus which we put aside. Two minutes later we were asked to place out dessert order. We then sat with empty plates for some time whilst the staff chatted a bit more. No one cleared the plates, so when the dessert arrived the waitress had no clue what to do so put the desserts on another table, took the plates away, came back an placed the dessert in front of us with no cutlery!! A total shambles. When the hotel asked for a review we relayed the above experience and we did receive an apology and were told that the staff are trainees. We offered some advice but surely you would not put staff in front of customer with out some basic training and at least one experienced staff member to ensure the basics of service are covered. Apart from the above experience we enjoyed our stay at the hotel and can only hope service in the restaurant improves.
