Mwangwa Valley Game Lodge was a pleasant New Year’s family getaway for our group of six adults and two children. The setting is peaceful and makes for an easy escape from Pretoria or Johannesburg, although the final stretch is a dirt road. The lodge has charm, but some aspects could be improved. The three-bedroom chalet is better described as two bedrooms with additional loft beds. The en-suite bathroom has no separating wall, which limits privacy. The kitchen was not ideal for self-catering, with no oven and a very small microwave. There are no air conditioners, only fans, which made the summer heat challenging. The lodge game drive was fairly limited, as only two of the Big Five are present; some guests may prefer to book drives directly through Dinokeng Game Reserve. The playground had broken equipment (later removed), and we did experience occasional power cuts, which were understandable. Staff were friendly and welcoming. The lodge would benefit from some general maintenance and updating. The games room was very basic; adding a working TV or table tennis table would enhance it. The swimming pools were uninviting and could be improved with better cleaning, lighter pool finishes, or added lighting. Some areas also feel dated, such as old wedding albums and the chapel windows. A highlight was the beautifully decorated New Year’s Eve dinner, with a fun Mexican fiesta theme and live music creating a great atmosphere. Overall, Mwangwa Valley Game Lodge is a pleasant nearby escape with good potential. With some TLC and thoughtful upgrades, the experience could be significantly enhanced.
