Did you ever stay someplace and wish you hadn’t? That was pretty much my experience with Wanderstay. I had a place booked downtown, but cancelled it because it was nearly three times as expensive and Wanderstay looked like a cool place. The problems started as soon as I arrived. After a four hour flight and an hour long Uber ride due to traffic, I just wanted to settle in, but I found myself locked out. Apparently they had send me a check-in form to fill out by email at 10AM that day when I was already at the airport. It went into my spam folder and so I never saw it, and I hadn’t been told to look for it. I spoke with someone else staying at the hostel that said they had the same experience. After calling and finally getting in, I got into my room to discover that the light wouldn’t turn on. After I climbed up to fix that, I unpacked. I’m surprised that no one could just check that light quickly before I checked in. Even though this was billed as a private room, there’s no place to put your stuff other than the lockers. Then there was the heat issue. The room was extremely cold basically the entire time I was there. They kept turning up the heat and trying to fix it, but it was still really cold and never did get fixed. The blankets provided did keep me warm, but you can’t sit up in the bottom bunk at all. I had access to the top bunk, but it was hard to get up and down, so I just wrapped a blanket around myself and sat at the desk that way which as you can imagine is very annoying. The lack of heat made the entire stay unpleasant and one has to wonder why I couldn’t have just been given a portable heater. If there truly was no solution, then maybe offer to refund a day’s rate? It’s really not proper to just say “sorry, we’re having a cold spell,” but that’s basically what the answer was. The last day I was there someone was screaming/arguing upstairs at the top of their lungs. I didn’t bother to investigate. The second night I was there, I had to go upstairs at 10PM at night to ask a guy sitting in the kitchen to please turn down the YouTube video of an opera singer that he was blasting at top volume. Luckily he was pleasant about it, but if he hadn’t been, I don’t know what I could have done about it. There isn’t always someone at the front desk, so if you have a question or a problem it can’t always be taken care of right then, although I will admit that the staff are friendly and try to help out when you find one of them. Officially they are only there 9am-3pm but even this isn’t always so. Then there are the small things like no towel, even a cloth one in the kitchen to dry your hands after you wash your dishes. People were good about doing their dishes, but the trash was always overflowing it seemed. I kept seeing requests for reviews all over the hostel and I even got an email about how it’s a small business and please help out to give a review, but yet the owner doesn’t want to take the time to do the
