Our last night after an amazing month in New Zealand. We spent a lot of time finding this location and deciding to book the room. We arrived a tad late, 7:15ish pm. Rang the bell, rang the bell again and the proprietor was so incredibly rude. Said that he saw us in town earlier, impossible we just arrived, and refused to let us stay. Never in my life have I been treated this way! Unacceptable!

We stayed one night here, but would have been happy with more!! When we arrived Simon greeted us with a smile, enthusiasm, and made us very welcoming . Upstairs we stayed in the Ruru Suite. Beautiful view of the water from our bedroom, where our bedroom door opened up onto the front deck. Lovely to sit and have a wine or a cuppa. (We didn't find the road noise a problem ). Comfortable King size bed . Suite is very tastefully decorated, tidy and spotlessly clean. Another cute single bedroom too. So suite could sleep 3. There was a kitchenette- jug, microwave, fridge, tea/coffee facilities. Flatscreen tv with sky. Heat pump . Bathroom- toilet,shower, vanity, hairdryer, heated towel rail. Next door to the Old Oak is a lovely Indian restaurant for sit down or takeaway. A 5-10 min walk for cafes, Four Square supermarket, World famous fish n chip shop. Couple of gift shops. 45min drive to Kerikeri. Thank you Simon and Kiyo for a very enjoyable stay .

Excellent hosts, very welcoming and nothing was difficult for them. The property is in excellent condition, the bedrooms are also in excellent condition and stylish. The bed and linen were first class. We would definitely return. It is easy walking distance to restaurant’s and bars in Mangonui.

Loved my stay at the Old Oak Hotel!! They were so welcoming and the building and surrounding area are absolutely stunning. A short walk to everywhere in town and a short drive to the beach. Quiet, clean, and lovely. Would stay again!

My partner and I stayed at the Old Oaks for two nights recently on our way North. It was a very positive experience. We had a wonderful stay in the so called Pohutukawa Suite which is a front room overlooking a delightful garden. There were minimal cooking facilities with only a microwave and toaster available however we managed. This room really has a lovely Vista and we were well looked after by Jennifer. The problem with Mangonui is that much of the available food (or at least food that we discovered) is of poor quality and overpriced. No available cooking facilities can be a bit difficult. It means for us that a 2 day stay would be max.

Host described guest a little piece of sh*t. He is rac**m , discrimin**e as the skin color and nationality. if the host cannot run the hotel as a business, then shut it down. No late check in ( yes, no late check in). rules are based on the owner’s discretion, threaten the guest to leave the hotel, strongly advise the owner to understand the meaning of a HOTEL! Avoid this hotel, always avoid! What a waste for the such a nice hotel building. As a frequent traveller, this is the worst experience ever. And being describe a piece of sh*t and arrog**t. I should say, mind your attitudes, mood is transformative! Please don’t be rude to the guest of being late check in, please don’t be rude or threaten to guest as friends visit due to dropping us back to the hotel. Will advise the travel agent to avoid this hotel!

Lovely and historic hotel in a charming place in the Northlands. Hosts are excellent and helpful. Comfortable beds and spacious room supplied with coffees, teas, and lovely bath items. We feel like we are visiting friends in their fine home.

Stayed at the Old Oak as a base to explore Northland over the Christmas holidays. Great location to visit all Northland's attractions and plenty of food and drink options all within an easy walk. Room was clean, comfortable and of good quality with harbour / garden views from the private deck. Perfect for sundowners. Hosts were excellent providing local advice in a friendly manner and happy to accommodate us if we had a request/question. Would definitely recommend it (have already done so) and book again if in the area.

Just as advertised, lovely historic hotel that has been converted to just a few stunning rooms. Our suite had everything we needed, superb bed and comfy mattress. Views over the garden and bay. Truly only a 5 minute stroll along the board walk to town with shops, cafe's and restaurants. Our hosts, Jennifer and Justin were knowledgeable and friendly. Absolutely loved our stay here.

We loved our stay at The Old Oak in Mangonui. It’s such a relaxed spot for anyone touring the far north, quiet but with easy access to the local shops and cafes. The suite we stayed in was ideal to come back to and chill after busy days and Justin and Jennifer were welcoming and informative hosts. The rooms were beautifully set up with everything we could have wished for; stunning harbour views and access to a very pretty cottage garden. Will be top of our list for our next Northland trip.

A real gem! My husband and I spent 3 nights at The Old Oak, and have nothing but good things to say. We had a first floor room with a view (hello stunning sunrise over the harbour) and a balcony on two sides. The rooms were stylishly appointed, clean and comfy. Jennifer and Justin, the hosts, were great! Both were very friendly and helpful. Justin had all info on things to see and do on our trip up to Cape Reinga, even lending us a chilly bin for the day, and I loved that Jennifer greeted me by name one morning (how often do you get that at a hotel?). We would definitely recommend The Old Oak and would not hesitate to visit again. To Justin and Jennifer …. Thank you, it was a stay to remember :-)

I had the pleasure of staying one night at The Old Oak Hotel Mangonui in May 2023 for business. What a beautiful place, everything from the view, comfort, space, cleanliness and location far exceeded my expectations - and my expectations were high. The hotel is a credit to the owners who themselves are a great couple, very friendly and only too happy to offer recommendations for meals and local attractions. I stayed in the Ruru room, which was on the second floor with a veranda and incredible harbour view. The shower had amazing pressure fyi. I was so impressed, I will be recommending this hotel and coming back with my family. Regards Fi Lilley

We stayed one night at the Old Oak, drove for a while and planned to find a hotel on the west coast of New Zealand, retreated to the Old Oak, and decided to stay a third night, each time in a different room. It was a real find. Not much to look at on the outside (sorry, Jennifer!), but the rooms inside are beautiful. The water is right across the street, and there are restaurants a lovely 5-10 minute walk away. Convenient parking. Cannot recommend this wonderful place enough. And Jennifer and Justin are the nicest, sweetest most helpful hosts ever. (PS: have breakfast at the nearby Little Kitchen.)
