An absolutely lovely experience, can't fault the place. Lovely food, very friendly staff, lovely grounds. Couldn't have been better. Would definitely recommend Alfa coach city breaks. Excellent value for money.

Oh dear, what have I done? I told my friend that the Alfa Waverley Castle Hotel was good, it was when I was here previously. Today feeder coach and main coach were fine, driver said he set the temperature to 22c, it was fine. Room's window wouldn't open. The service in the dining room for dinner was terrible. We were on a table for two next to two ladies who were on their first course. We ordered ours . I had the mushrooms. It was one mushroom sliced up in a watery sauce, more like a soup.the garlic bread was floating on the liquid. My main course was beef, two small thin slices with gravy. Potatoes were hard, no gravy for the Yorkshire pudding. Carrots had skin on, quite a bit of which was black. The waiter didn't come back to us, we had to call them for the next course and again for coffee. One and a half mugs for two of us. 8.30 the entertainment was due to start, about 9pm it was announced that the entertainer hadn't turned up and the bingo would be starting earlier. Following day was a trip to Edinburgh, coach nice and warm. All the toilet users were complaining about lack of water to flush the toilet and no water to wash hands. Bad service in dining room again, in at 6, 6.40 finished first two courses then ignore for 45 minutes! Pork chops was inedible! Nearly every one sent theirs back. No entertainment at 8.30, bingo till 9 then a male singer, average. Better entertainment Tuesday, a singer on his guitar and NO backing tape , he was very good. Breakfast Wednesday cereals fine. I ordered a fried egg, beans and fried bread. The plate was luke warm and the fried egg was cold. I've never had an egg like it. I won't be coming here again. I'll stick to Daish holidays. That's enough for now!

Lovely building, a little tired but clean, which is important. Given that there are three large floors, the hotel is super quiet...lovely! The food is excellent, plenty of choice. The staff in the bar are super efficient and very personable. There was entertainment every evening.

The Waverley Castle hotel - people's views on this hotel will be completely different than mine and they will no doubt wonder if I was staying at the same hotel as them. I am reviewing my experience not theirs. Our room 210 ( avoid at all costs ) was probably the smallest room in the hotel. Definitely needed up dating, we had to prop the window open with a toilet roll just to get some air into the room due to the curtains being so heavy that they closed the window when up against them. We found it very difficult to actually open / close the curtains because they would not ride along the curtain rails. Carpet very iffy. I will say though that the lady who cleaned our room did a very good job indeed. To be fair we do not go holiday to watch TV in fact it was out of the ordinary to actually switch the TV on at all , however it is a nice to have and for some reason we did switch the TV on - guess what the it was pixilating . One of the hotel staff came up and rebooted it for us, alas to no avail , after being ok for all of about 2 mins it pixilated again. The sink in the bathroom was so small that when you turn the taps on your feet got covered in more water than was actually in the sink. We had requested a walk in shower and yet again that didn't happen but the couple whom we were with got one. The lighting in the room was also very poor. I realise that the hotel is very old and this might be a bit nitpicky but floor boards will obviously creek due to their age, I unfortunately am a very light sleeper and the people in the next room to us seemed to be moving about at all hours waking me up. The service in the dining room was painfully slow at times and there seemed to be no structure or system to how the staff worked and it didn't help that no one supervising what was actually happening regarding this service etc The hotel definitely needs more staff because it is obvious that they are struggling. Breakfast was ok and reasonable quality plenty to choose from. Evening meal was pretty poor to say the least and there seemed to always be an item missing from the stated dish e.g. I ordered a veg chilli with Naan bread - the dish arrived no Naan. Dishes don't look like they are being checked prior to being served. I totally agree with a previous review that the location of the hotel does make it very difficult for the less mobile to get around even into Melrose itself which is supposedly just a 20 min ? walk away. We managed to get a taxi after about 1/2 and hour wait. However when we asked how easy it was to get a taxi at night from Melrose to the hotel he said don't bother trying because Melrose itself doesn't have a taxi firm and any taxi that we did get would have to reluctantly come from Galashiels. I feel that either the hotel or even Alfa should be able to offer some sort of shuttle service into Melrose even if it is just during daytime. We checked in easily and the staff were helpful however the first thing we noticed was the smell. The whole hotel, stairways, hallways, lifts and room smelled musty and like dirty water. The room wasn't the cleanest but it was ok. The soap dispenser didn't work properly but we figured out how to get soap. We then left for the evening for our event. When we came back late at night our room was full of loads of little flies. They were all over the window, the wall, around the light and all over one of the beds. We tried to wipe them off the bed and they kept coming back. They were in the bags and clothes we had. We called the night manager on the number found at reception and he came to inspect. He asked if we had opened the window. We explained we hadn't touched the window and he managed to put his hand behind the frame without opening it showing a hole and entry point we didn't know was there. He was going to just spray the flies and leave us. After explaining I was asthmatic and my friend had chest issues and we couldn't spray the room and stay in it, nor did we want to stay in the room with all the flies he informed us they were busy and quite booked and would have to see if they could move us. Thankfully they found another room but it was a double instead of a twin. Me and my friend are nuerodivergent so sharing a bed was very difficult for us and we hardly slept. We went for breakfast in the morning but it was not great, some of the food was cold and didn't taste nice. Upon checkout we tried to speak to the staff on the desk about our issues and he seemed disinterested in the issues we had. We just left but we're extremely disappointed with the whole experience. I would not recommend staying here at all. I have uploaded pictures and due to the light you will have to zoom in to see the amount of flies.

Lovely hotel but over 1 mile to walk no walks near by as such little public transport about. Beautiful views though

Just back from a five day holiday to this hotel and it was a great experience.asked for a quiet room,got put on the third floor and it was great.restaurant was good, food good service was good.bar was good quick service.looks to me like they are doing some improvement works to the hotel,which has great potential.tweedbank station is about a twenty minute walk away and we got a return ticket to edinburgh for £15.10.

The building itself has loads of character and has the potential to be better managed than it currently is. We had a 3 night stay, and our room certainly needs some TLC. The carpet has various stains, and the walls have marks on them. The bathroom tiles have lost their grout. The bottom part of the sink as it meets the floor the caulking is a mess. The extractor fan doesn't work and has a load of dust in it. We were on the ground floor and had good water pressure. The food was not the best. Roast dinners over 3 days with different meats. Portions were very small. Three small roast potatoes, slice of meet, two small portions of veg, and a cremated Yorkshire pudding. The tea & coffee were awful. The staff are lovely and very attentive and are happy to help. The outside of the building is currently having work done, so there are signs of improvement happening.

Went on an Alfa coach trip to this hotel and it was lovely. Though old it is exceptionally clean and the staff were friendly

Just had 2 excellent days at the waverly castle hotel, premium room , comfortable and clean, great place to stay for exploring border towns, staff excellent, singers on both nights , we really like robbie carran he's a great entertainer , we have stayed here 3 times recently, and will be back,

Just back from alfa holiday .... Melrose was nice had shops to look round ...hotel was ok....our room was very dusty and carpet looked like it hadn't been hoovered....we had a quite room nice not to hear door's banging....we had a very good coach driver Damien.... Can not fault the meals ...time you have to wait for meals was 45-50 minutes....staff are rushed off there feet always apologising for your wait on meals ....we didn't have breakfast 2 mornings we went elsewhere because of the time ....... Sorry to have to say we will not be back at this hotel ......due to time waiting for meals

Not long home from a few days away with a coach party the hotel itself is lovley and set in nice grounds very peaceful great location,the food and rooms were of a good standard and most of the staff were lovley and friendly I say most as an older lady on the bar was not very nice!the way she spoke to staff is shocking and her manner gives off an unpleasant atmosphere in the bar area overall!the other people on the bar were lovley and welcoming.our stay was good and other than the mentioned issue we would not hesitate no return again in the future

Really lovely welcoming hotel & staff absolutely amazing. Rooms need updating but overall comfortable. Restaurant clean with good food & excellent service.
