There are few times in life that will leave you speechless. One of those times is stepping out of your room and taking in the view across the caldera. To call it breathtaking is an understatement. The scenery sets the tone for everything else in this wonderful facility, whose roots date back a few centuries to a Santorini before it became a favorite among tourists. First, you cannot go wrong with a private hot tub that has the view I mentioned earlier. It is a welcome amenity after a day spent walking about Fira, taking the hike to Oia, or doing anything else that involves some activity. Hint: take comfortable shoes; flip-flops and stilettos will have limited utility on pedestrian walkways. Second, your day will start on a high note with breakfast made to order and delivered to your room. Again, eat outside; the view does not get old, and mornings are a very comfortable part of the day. We were there in October and it was actually a bit cool first thing. Not overcoat cool, but long-sleeve t-shirt. You order what you want the night before, select a delivery time, and the staff does the rest. If you're lucky, you'll get our guy, Argyris. Ask him how he's doing, and he will say, "I am always good. Even when I'm not good, I'm good." I'm trying to hold onto that philosophy; life is a lot easier when you're upbeat. The island is full of activities and possibilities. The hotel manager, Kostas, hooked us up with a tour that covered most of Santorini, included the Akrotiri "lost city" excavation, and was capped off with a wine-tasting and lunch. You will stop in several places, which is ideal for getting your bearings and deciding what to do during the rest of your stay. Though Santorini is not physically large, it has a tremendous variety of places to go, things to see and do, and different appeals to your inner vacationer. There are the color-coded beaches if you just want some sun, inland villages that retain a traditional flavor, boat and catamaran excursions, and more shopping than you'll have time for. And that does not even cover the food, which runs the gamut from sidewalk gyro stands to tavernas to fine dining. Try it all. There is even a McDonald's, if you are not very adventurous, located conveniently next door to a bakery stocked with fresh-made spanakopita, tiropita, baklava, and all the rest. When you are done for the day or if you just want a break, the rooms are very comfortable and quite roomy. Nighttime is fairly quiet; Santorini is not the party-central island that Mykonos is, though there are several bars and clubs if you wish to indulge. Either way, the rooms are well insulated from any noise and you will sleep the sleep of the gods. When you reserve a room - and you're going to do that, right? - or email a question, odds are that you will hear from Demos, the reservations manager. Tell him that Alex & Cindy sent you and that they could not stop talking about how wonderful Nefeles is. The staff will pamper you with fresh
