This was our first family stay at a youth hostel with our 2 children aged 5 and 2. As our 3 year old has complex needs it was a bit of a gamble but we managed to source her an accessible room in the courtyard with one parent, and the other parent and child stayed in the house (next time we would love to book the 2 accessible rooms side by side so we can stay closer together as a family unit). The AMAZING thing about this hostel Is that as it is on national trust land they have installed a changing places toilet next to the accessible rooms. For those who require these facilities this makes this YHA one of a kind and truly accessible and usable by people with complex needs and their carers. We were able to access the dining room and lounge and have lovely walks in the grounds as a family. We loved it and will definitely aim to return!

Negatives - findings the place! There needs to be better signage and there is nil lightning from car park to the builidng. Its very very dark arriving. And trying to find the place and the care park. Positives- everything else! Car park and building felt safe, and it's a beautiful location and building. Inside felt like every other yha, which is a bit of a shame but practical and functional. Clean. It was soooo warm! Which was a pleasant suprise. But also you could control this yourself once in the room. I chose a private room shared bathrooms. Which again. Functional but clean and fine. Staff were lovely! Facilities good and i really wish i could have stayed for breakfast looked great. Id love to come back here with more time and see the national trust site, village and area. The walking routes and info at reception are fabulous. The coffee is great. Will be back !

Such an amazing place with lovely staff and incredible views of the peaks. we found it by chance but we will definitely be coming back for a longer stay. Great atmosphere for walkers and families alike, lots of room for people to mix or to take time out and relax

We stayed here while we were visiting Alton towers, it’s a beautiful place to stay, set in large grounds with outstanding scenery all around. The family rooms with en-suite are nice and clean, and it was a bargain at £41 for the night. Staff were lovely, and the facilities were good with a well equipped kitchen, pool and table tennis tables, and good sized social areas.

I have been visiting Ilam hall for many years. Everything about this place is excellent. The views, the rooms, the food and the staff. Thanks again especially to Kelly the manager who is always lovely and welcoming. Will see you next year!!!

Very friendly staff in a great old building. I have visited many YHs and this is one of the best. Slight con was that are few toilets in a big building!

Arrived late having covered 55km walking. We weren't in a great state (cold, tired and aching). Staff really friendly and helpful (almost immediately lost our key and they helped us to find it). The Kiwi who checked us in gets a special mention. Most beautiful area and building too.

The food was quite dry, the beds were mostly hard and the pillows were too fluffy and my head sank into them(personal preference)! The bathroom was quite pleasant, I only stayed for one night but it was a tiny bedroom for 6 people. There wasn’t any service or wi-fi except in the reception. I feel it could be a little more clean but the staff were nice. Surprisingly, there was no locks on the doors, where it would be possible for someone to come in without a key or anything. But in all fairness the Hostel is in the middle of no where and I’m sure they take very good care of the place. Was a nice place to stay for one night! It’s great for large groups!

What a lovely place to stay, absolutely beautiful. Just a pity there were so many unruly kids and such poor parenting. Even the staff were annoyed. Now I am filling the word count as I have said what I wanted to.

Staff really accommodating and friendly Beds really comfortable we had an accesable room which was really warm and cosy despite being out of the main hall. Great value for money in a beautiful setting Thank You

I arranged a mini cycling tour with my cycling club and Ilam Hall was the chosen venue. From start the finish it was simply a great experience. The staff were all friendly and helpful and couldn't do enough for us. The evening meal was served quickly and served with a smile, what more do you want? What did annoy me, and this is no reflection of the staff at all, l walked into the lounge the following morning where families had been sat with thier children the night before. There were odd jigsaw pieces and Scrabble letters dotted around the floor. I think it's really selfish that people don't clear up the mess that thier children have made and return any loose puzzle or game pieces to the correct boxes. So now someone else has to do it so other people can enjoy the games or puzzles, so selfish. 😡

Located in the stunning national trust park, the building will take your breath away. The staff are super friendly & welcoming, all areas social and private are immaculately clean. We used this as a base for alton towers and it was perfect. About 25 min drive.

Great location, friendly staff and an absolute bargain. The only downsides are the communal kitchen (the window fan is filthy) and the lack of any environmental concern about heat loss from the the many drafty doors and windows. The self catering dining area could be cosy if you did not see daylight through the door. The broken bathroom window needs at least a temporary patch. "Waiting to get it fixed" is not a good excuse, particularly when it is below freezing.
