We stayed at Hôtel de la Gare in Troyes as a convenient stopover during our road trip from the UK to Barcelona. Running late after a full day in Lille, we were concerned about arriving before reception closed—but the hotel staff were very accommodating. Despite the language barrier, the receptionist provided helpful instructions in case we arrived after hours. In the end, we made it just before 10pm and were warmly welcomed—grateful for the extra effort to wait for us. Travelling in a VW Transporter, we couldn’t access the hotel’s underground car park due to height restrictions (1.95m), but found free parking just across the road—free overnight and on Sundays, which worked perfectly for us. This detail might be useful for anyone with a larger vehicle. The room was well laid out for a family, with two double beds, a small table and chairs, a standing fan, a desk, and a TV. We especially appreciated the French windows that opened up like patio doors—perfect for a quiet evening drink after a long day on the road. Breakfast the next morning was simple but satisfying: a typical continental spread with good bread, pastries, and the bonus of freshly boiled eggs you could prepare yourself. The hotel also represented very good value for money. The room was reasonably priced and even with breakfast included, it felt like a budget-friendly yet comfortable option—ideal for a short family stopover. Overall, Hôtel de la Gare offered everything we needed for a restful overnight stay: friendly staff, a comfortable room, and a good location. We’d happily recommend it as a charming, great-value stop for anyone heading through eastern France.
