The Griffin is the neglected third cousin of the Williamsburg Inn and the Williamsburg Lodge. You need to know it doesn't have amenities of its own and is a 1/4 mile walk away from the amenities at the inn and 1/3 mile from the grab-and-go breakfast at the lodge. The room was spacious and I could tell that housekeeping had done their best, but everything in it was decades-old and stained. They don't seem to be doing maintenance. Our TV didn't work when first turned on. There's an old snack station and fridge in the common area but they're empty with a note posted for you to walk to the lodge if you need anything. Again, that's 1/3 mile away. One night we called the front desk for help because we'd picked up takeout but didn't have any utensils and the front desk told us they didn't know if they "could" send us utensils up from the restaurant. They told us they'd check and call back but they didn't. The next morning we asked for ourselves at the restaurant and the staff were happy to provide us utensils. It turns out the front desk had not only never called us back but they hadn't even checked with the restaurant. Since our stay was part of a 4-hotel road trip, I can say definitively that you get better front desk service than that at a chain hotel. In summary, the large size of the rooms, proximity to the colonial area and the patio are the reasons to stay at this property. But don't expect the amenities or updates you'd get at most other hotels.
