Construction began in the early 13th century as a replacement for an earlier Romanesque church, and continued throughout the rest of the century in the local Scheldt Gothic architectural style. Typical of this style are the use of blue-grey stone from the Tournai region, a single large tower above the crossing, and slender towers at the corners of the building.
