Mount St. Helens, an active volcano, is located in Scarmenia County, Washington, in the Pacific Northwest, 154 kilometers south of Seattle and 85 kilometers northeast of Portland. It is part of the Cascade Mountains. The name of the mountain comes from Lord St. Helen, a British diplomat, who was a friend of George Vancouver, an explorer who surveyed the area in the 18th century. Mount St. Helen is part of the circum-Pacific volcanic belt that contains more than 160 active volcanoes, known for ash eruptions and volcanic clastic flows. The last eruption occurred at 8:32 a.m. on 18 May 1980.
The National Monument to Mount St. Helen is the most devastating eruption site in American history. In 1980, when Mount St. Helen erupted suddenly, the instantaneous destructive force turned 600 square kilometres around it into ashes, wilderness and extinction of life, which became another great disaster in human history. Volcanoes are the window of the earth's core and the most explosive force on earth. Traveling around the volcano, vacations are undoubtedly thrilling and must not be missed.
