This little restaurant is in the heart of Riccarton surrounded by similar bustling businesses. The service was prompt and polite. The food was very well priced, large portioned, and true to our expectations. A very expensive menu to choose from. A favorite of my friends due to its long opening hours. Give it a try with friends, it might be your new spot!
We were newly in town, staying in a Motel and wanted a nice Chinese meal. The motel had a folder (produced by the local tourist board I think) which lists places to eat in the various areas of the city. MISTAKE 1 - I assumed these were tested recommendations, in retrospect I can see that is nothing more that a collection of advertising sheets. Anyhow we selected the Ancestral as it seemed to be nice - MISTAKE 2 When we walked in I should have followed my instincts and turned around, but we were tired and hungry, and didn't know where else to go to find another Chinese. The tatty worn out menu cards have pictures of the various meals, and we made a selection. When it arrived the meals looked nothing like the illustrations, so much so I called the girl over about my meal but she assured me that it was correct. My wife's meal was Sweet n sour Pork, which arrived almost cold. I complained and the girl tried to claim it was OK but eventually agreed to replace it. The replacement was freshly cooked and hot, but the rice was only slightly warm, (as was mine). Basically the meal was VERY VERY bad the attitude of the staff BAD. I have no idea how this place keeps going it is so BAD. If you are contemplating going here, do yourself a favour DONT, even if you go hungry and don't find anything to eat anywhere else, it is still better than eating at the Ancestral
