Stunning centrepiece of the stunning La Defence area.
Amazing place... very different style to the 'Arc de Triomphe' visable in the far distance at the top of the 'Champs Elysee'.Lots of modern architecture in the immediate area... Real feeling of light and space here... quite an antidote to the overkill of the classic french style in the centre of Paris.
Just BEAUTIFUL! I love it! :D
Yes this is a bit like visiting Canary Wharf in London or Wall Street in NYC but the modernist buildings here are very impressive and on such an enormous scale. Get the metro out to La Defense and then walk back towards Arc de Triomph. The change in architecture from modernist to brutalism to neoclassical is fascinating and I can think of few other places where the same transition occurs so smoothly.
In a straight line with Arc de Triomphe, stands Grande Arche de LA Defense. It was built for the bicentennial of the French Revolution. It is absolutely massive. It is so large that the entire Notre Dame cathedral can fit underneath its arch. It's impressive to see, but quite windy. To help cut the wind, they built a cloud tarp beneath the arch. On a first trip to Paris, you can skip this, but it's cool to see on a repeat visit our if you're an architecture buff. This is also the heart of the business district.
