寺內古柏參天，雜樹交蔭。碑文記載，漢時土山崩壞，裂陷成洞，洞內土丘高及十丈，形似佛像，傳為山崩佛現，乃佛教凈土之因緣，故在此建寺。據考證，寺始建於北齊，金泰和五年（1205年）重建，明代又多次重修。

大佛寺又名凈因寺，位於太原市北郊區崛山麓的土堂村，距市區20公里。寺依山而建,，西倚崛山，東臨汾河。創建於北齊，金代泰和五年（公元1205年）重建，明代又多次修復。現存殿堂，多為明清建築。寺為兩進院落。
