米蘭三年展的主辦者是非營利的同名文化基金會，成立於1923年，專門舉辦展覽和其他有關建築、設計、裝飾藝術、時尚、新媒體和城市設計的活動。三年展最初舉辦地位於臨近米蘭的蒙扎市，1933年正式遷移至米蘭，其後一直舉辦了20屆，至1996年暫停。意大利時尚建築設計界的一件盛事，米蘭三年展在暫停20年後於2016年4月2日至9月12日重新面世。組織者將本屆三年展主題確定為“21世紀：設計之後的設計”。
