Mongshan Buddha is a cliff Buddha located in the northwest of Sidi Village, Jinyuan District, Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province. It is a cultural relic protection unit of Taiyuan City. The Mongshan Buddha was excavated during the period of Tianbao in the Northern Qi Dynasty. It was originally a cliff Buddha statue after the Kaihua Temple in Mongshan. Tang Gaozu Li Yuan, Tang Gaozong Li Zhi and Empress Wu Zetian, Emperor Li Keyong of the latter Tang Dynasty, and Liu Zhiyuan of the latter Han Dynasty all came here to rite Buddha. In the late Yuan Dynasty, the Mongshan Buddha was destroyed. In the census of place names in Taiyuan City in 1980, the Mongshan Buddha was rediscovered. When it was discovered, the Buddha's head was lost. The Buddha's body was buried in the earth and rocks, and the weathering was serious. Ancient books record that the height of Mengshan Buddha is 59 meters. According to actual measurement, the height from the bottom of the legs to the neck of Mengshan Buddha is about 30 meters. It is estimated proportionally that the height of the original Buddha's head is about 10 meters. In addition, the height of the pedestal repaired by later generations is 6 meters, and the original height of Mengshan Buddha is about 46 meters. Since 2007, Taiyuan has protected and developed the Mongshan Buddha, strengthened the Buddha's body, and built a new 12-meter-high Buddha's head according to the Buddha's head unearthed in Taiyuan. In October 2008, the Mongshan Buddha was opened to the public.
