Place Garibaldi, the oldest square in Nice, was built in the 18th century. It was named after the legendary hero of Italian unification, Garibaldi. In the center of the square stood a statue of Garibaldi. Nice was transferred from the Kingdom of Sardinia to France in 1860 as a condition for France to support Italian unification. Only a hundred years ago, in fact, the time is not very long.
