Shanxi... Wutai Mountain... Xiantong Temple, also known as Daxiantong Temple, Dafu Lingyu Temple, Garden Temple, Dahuayan Temple, Dajixiang Xiantong Temple, Dahuguo Shengguang Yongming Temple and Yongming Temple, is located in the northern side of Taihuai Town in the central area of Wutaishan Mountain, Shanxi Province. Xiantong Temple is the largest temple in Wutai Mountain. It was built in Yongping, Emperor of Han and Ming Dynasty. It was first named Dafu Lingjiu Temple. In 1687, it was renamed Daxiantong Temple. It is one of the earliest Buddhist temples in China. The existing buildings of Xiantong Temple are of Qing Dynasty scale. The temple covers an area of about 80,000 square meters. There are more than 400 different kinds of buildings, mostly in Ming and Qing Dynasties. The halls and chambers are well-laid out with clear central axis and symmetrical distribution halls. Seven halls are arranged on the central axis, including Shuilu Hall, Dawenshu Hall, Daxiong Palace, Wuliangdian, Qianbo Wenshu Hall, Tongdian and Back High Hall. The copper hall was cast in the 38th year of Wanli in Ming Dynasty (AD 1610), sharing 100,000 kilograms of copper. It is one of the best preserved copper halls in China. In 1982, the State Council listed Xiantong Temple as one of the key cultural relics protection units in China.
