Ocean Beach is probably one of the greatest spots in San Diego to experience local culture. As other reviewers have said, there isn't a grain of pretentiousness in the whole place, unless you go to one of the local and fantastic breweries and want to order a Bud Light. Actually, you still probably wouldn't get any gruff from anyone because this is such a relaxed neighborhood. Food can be hit or miss just because there's a demand for less expensive meals in the area, but there are some fresh and delicious culinary gems in the area if you know where to look. This is one of the few places I would recommend going to for an entire day if you're on vacation in San Diego and like the more Bohemian vibe. Start out with some ocean view breakfast, do a little shopping in the obstinately privately-owned small shops, hit the waves, and round out the night with some great local bands and a unique craft beer. San Diego relaxation at its finest.
Gritty but cool, I love this beach neighborhood which tourists often exchange for the fancier beaches like La Jolla and Coronado. If you want to see a more authentic, beachy, aging-hippie ish community ( complete with druggies, drum circles at sunset, and many, many dogs); then OB is the place for you. The beach always has huge surf, and the Dog Beach nearby is always crowded. Take a walk on the famed OB Pier, and the sea views are incredible. I love this oddball beach community, and once you go, I'm sure
