If you are looking for locally-raised food and traditional Puerto Rican dishes prepared by talented chefs, this is the place. I wish I could have returned again. I went for lunch on a weekday and got a table immediately. The waiter was friendly and helpful with suggestions. I was not too hungry and ordered the glazed pork belly atop mofongo stuffed with shredded pork, and guanabana juice. The pork belly was fantastic, and the mofongo was nothing like the dish I had at another restaurant (much more flavorful!). I also purchased a half gallon of guanabana juice to go; there are fruits and vegetables and juices and other items for purchase at the restaurant. There is also a full bar in a separate room.
I visited La Jaquita Baya for late lunch (4:00 pm) on a tuesday. Mariemma was very welcoming and helpful, she was very friendly as she took my order. I was surprised when my food arrived, it tasted so good. As a local I can tell you that this is typical local food done right. Place looks very good, service was very nice with Mariemma and food was delicious..... is there anything else needed? Highly recommended!
Do not be put off when you approach this restaurant by its outdoor bar with just six or so bar stools! Walk into the restaurant and you will be in an air conditioned, small, cozy restaurant with a log-cabin feel to it. The menu is not very varied and, as I live in the USA, it was tempting to go for the safe items like filet mignon or grilled fish. I went for everything local except for shellfish, to which I am allergic. The food is truly wonderful and the service warm and friendly. I started with a ground beef quiche (sorry but I don't know what it was called) which was superb, followed by skirt steak in a herb sauce chimichurra. For those of who who have eaten in Paris it was as close the Entrecôte Restaurant steak that I have ever had. Tender steak with a buttery sauce loaded with herbs and garlic. I had mine with mashed potatoes as I am trying to avoid fries! Like the menu, the wine list is not very varied but they serve Laurent Perrier champagne (we were celebrating) and some excellent reds for around $50 a bottle. I strongly recommend this place and I will definitely be back!
