A musical scale serves as a fundamental building block for the creation of melodies and harmonies in various musical practices. It is a hierarchical collection of pitches that span multiple octaves. The origin of these scales is a topic of fascination – were they invented or discovered? In this lecture, Professor Milton Mermikides explores the history, theory, and artistry behind the construction of scales in different styles. He delves into how each scale can form a vibrant and expressive palette of modal colors through a process called "rotation".
