Guangzhou Metro Map Guide: Insider Tips & Itinerary Planning

Natalie
2026年4月30日

Whenever the weekend rolls around and I crave a quick escape from Hong Kong’s fast-paced rhythm—without spending too long on the road—Guangzhou is always my go-to. Here, the slow-simmered, everyday warmth of old Xiguan meets the sleek, sky-piercing modernity of Zhujiang New Town.
This time, I ditched the hassle of ride-hailing apps and, armed with nothing but a metro card (or really, just my phone), set out to dive into the very fabric of the city. After all, with average daily ridership topping 10 million, the Guangzhou Metro is more than transportation—it’s a moving tapestry of life in Guangzhou.
👉 Handpicked Recommendations for the Hottest Things to Do in Guangzhou
Getting Around: Guangzhou Transport Options & Travel Tips
Heading north from Hong Kong, your choice of transportation often sets the tone for the journey from the very start.
Transports | Cons | |
|---|---|---|
High-speed rail | The fares are higher, departures are less frequent, and the fastest trip takes just 47 minutes. | |
Guangzhou-Shenzhen Intercity High-Speed Train | You’ll need to start in Shenzhen; the route is roundabout, and border-crossing wait times are unpredictable. | |
Direct Cross-Border Bus | The drive is relatively slow and long. |
The high-speed rail (West Kowloon direct to Guangzhou East or Guangzhou South) is undoubtedly my top pick. The fare may be a bit higher, but that 47-minute ride is just long enough for me to finish a cup of coffee and ease into the rhythm of switching cities. Especially when you arrive at Guangzhou East Station, you step straight into the city centre, seamlessly connecting to the metro for this trip.
Guangzhou Metro System Overview
Guangzhou Metro is the urban rail transit system serving Guangzhou and the Pearl River Delta. Line 1 opened in 1997, making Guangzhou the first city in South China to launch a metro. Guangzhou Metro ranks first nationwide in average daily passenger density, and its single-day ridership record has even hit 11.5694 million trips! For comparison, Hong Kong’s MTR carries about 5.04 million passengers a day—Guangzhou’s metro more than doubles that. Guangzhou locals really know how to ride the metro!

Top Itineraries: Exploring Guangzhou's Best Sights via Metro
Guangzhou’s subway network can feel like a maze—ride it without a plan and it’s easy to lose your way. Here are a few highlight routes I’ve put together for different moods to help you dodge the tourist traps and head straight to the heart of the city.
🚇Guangzhou Metro Map | Line 1: A Red Corridor Through Time
This is my favorite route because it weaves together Guangzhou’s past and present.

- Peasant Movement Institute Station: As I stepped out of the subway, a cluster of red walls and yellow-tiled roofs—the Former Site of the Peasant Movement Institute—stood solemnly in the sunlight. Towering old trees and timeworn red walls set the scene, making it a great place to snap photos with a deep sense of history.

- Chen Clan Ancestral Hall Station: The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall here is the epitome of Lingnan architecture. Look up at the roof ridges, where lifelike ceramic sculptures seem to come alive, and you can’t help but marvel at the craftsmanship of artisans from a century ago.

- Huangsha Station: Around dusk, I like to hop off here and walk over to Shamian Island. Strolling past rows of European-style buildings with the river breeze on my face, it feels like stepping back a century to the old foreign concession days.

🚇Guangzhou Metro Map | Line 2: A Green Wonderland in the City
If you’re like me and start craving nature after too long in the concrete jungle, this route is the top pick.

- Yuexiu Park Station: Be sure to check out the famous Five Rams Statue. The uphill climb can be a bit of a workout, but once you’re at the top taking in the view, you’ll understand why this city is known as the “City of Rams.”

- Memorial Hall Station: When that grand, octagonal, palace‑style landmark—the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall—comes into view, its solemn, dignified aura will take your breath away. Against the blue sky, those blue glazed tiles are mesmerizingly beautiful.

🚇Guangzhou Metro Map | Line 3: Feel the big-city pulse (with a heads-up)
This route—nicknamed the city's 'artery'—links you to Guangzhou at its most vibrant.

- Zhujiang New Town Station: Step out of the metro and the sleek, modern energy of Huacheng Square rushes over you. Look up at the Canton Tower (the “Little Waist”)—this is the best vantage point for capturing the city’s nightscape, where every photo seems to come with a cyberpunk filter.

- Hanxi Changlong Station: If you’re on a family trip, this stop connects you directly to Chimelong Resort—an adventure paradise for kids.

🚇Guangzhou Metro Map | Line 4: the former Military Academy site is waiting for you to check in!
The southern extension now runs straight to Nansha—hop on and kick off a fun-filled journey! At Wanshengwei Station, you’ll uncover little historical gems like the Huangpu Ancient Port; at University Town South Station, Lingnan Impression Park and the former site of the Whampoa Military Academy are just waiting for your check-in shot.
The elevated stretch is full of delights, with panoramic views of the Nansha Bridge and pastoral scenery—like gliding through a living postcard. No wonder it’s dubbed the “most beautiful above-ground metro”—the ride itself feels like a trip in its own right!

- University Town South Station: Home to the former Huangpu (Whampoa) Military Academy site. Step into its modest school buildings and feel the passage of time wash over you. Along the elevated sections of this line, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the Nansha Bridge and pastoral landscapes—the metro almost feels like a sightseeing train.

🚇Guangzhou Metro Map | Line 5: Opening the City’s Storybook!
Spanning from Liwan to Huangpu, hopping on Line 5 feels like opening a storybook filled with the city’s understated charms.
At Zoo Station, you can swing by Guangzhou Zoo; at Zhujiang New Town Station, the Huachenghui shopping district is a must-visit, brimming with style; and at Dashadong Station, there’s a library where you can leaf through a book by the floor-to-ceiling windows as cargo ships sound their horns on the Pearl River—a wonderfully poetic scene.

🚇Guangzhou Metro Map | Line 6: Journey Through Hidden Gems
This route is an absolute favorite for explorers! Start your adventure in the west at Baiyun Shabei Station (Baiyun Children’s Park) and ride east all the way to Tianhe—there’s fun at every turn. Hop off at Yide Road Station to snap the Sacred Heart Cathedral, a landmark steeped in history; then head to Botanical Garden Station, where the South China Botanical Garden serves up all the autumn vibes. And near Kemulang Station, Huolu Mountain Forest Park hides a summer-night firefly party among giant boulders—twinkling and magical. Who could resist a romance like that?

- Yide Road Station: Sacred Heart Cathedral is absolutely worth a special trip. When sunlight streams through the stained-glass windows and spills across the granite walls, the sense of the sacred and the serenity here can instantly soothe a restless mind.

🚇Guangzhou Metro Map | Line 7: So Romantic, It’s Unreal!
Stretching toward Foshan in the west and reaching Panyu in the east, this line is brimming with poetry!
Hop off at Yuangang Station to discover Yuyin Garden (Yuyin Shan Fang), a quintessential Lingnan classical garden that whisks you back to an elegant bygone era in seconds. Over at Zhongcun Station, you’re right next to Dafu Mountain Forest Park—perfect for cycling and hiking. Visit in autumn, when the bald cypress groves tint the lake a vivid red—it’s almost too romantic for words!

- Yuangang Station: Tucked away here is Yuyin Garden (Yuyin Shan Fang), one of the Four Great Classical Gardens of Lingnan. While it may not be as famous as the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, its intimate, exquisitely crafted spaces—where every step reveals a new view—are best savored at an unhurried pace.

🚇Guangzhou Metro Map | Line 8: Where Old Meets New
String together a journey where old meets new—let’s set off on a relaxed, fun-filled adventure!
At Xiaogang Station, Xiaogang Park is a haven for lake-view lovers; grab a seat and channel your inner lakeside poet. At Wanshengwei Station, the Metro Museum blends learning and play—who says museums can’t be fun? And at Chigang Station, Modiesha Park is the perfect riverside photo op: feel the breeze, soak up the waterfront views, and fall so hard for the scenery you’ll want to move in!
