Travel documents

If you're a Hong Kong permanent resident heading to Shanghai on your own, don't forget to bring your Hong Kong ID card and Home Return Permit. If your Home Return Permit has expired, be sure to book an appointment and renew it ahead of time. Travelers of other nationalities should bring a passport and a China visa (if needed).

Shanghai Weather

Shanghai’s weather can swing dramatically through the year, so choosing the right season for your self-guided trip to Shanghai is an important part of pre-trip planning. Summers are hot and rainy, while winters tend to be cold and dry; all things considered, spring and fall are the best times to visit. Crowds peak around Lunar New Year in February, the summer vacation period in July and August, and China’s National Day in October.

Opposite the river lie the futuristic skyscrapers of Lujiazui. Hopping on a Huangpu River night cruise allows travelers to enjoy the illuminated skyline away from the bustling walking crowds.

  • Best For: History buffs, night photography, romantic evening walks.
  • Suggested Duration: 2 hours (including a 45-minute river cruise).
  • Traveler Tip: The Bund’s lights turn on daily around 6:00 PM / 7:00 PM (depending on the season) and switch off at 10:00 PM. Plan your evening accordingly!

  • Best For: Culture seekers, architecture fans, local foodies.
  • Suggested Duration: 2–3 hours.
  • Traveler Tip: The traditional lantern displays around the bazaar during the Lantern Festival (around Chinese New Year) are spectacular, though crowds can be large.

Shanghai Must-Try Eats

Shanghai Eats #1 Shengjian Bao

Shengjian Bao is an absolute must-try staple of Shanghainese street food. Pan-fried in giant flat iron pans until the bottom achieves a golden, addictive crunch, these delicate buns are packed with juicy pork filling and steaming, flavorful broth, finished with a sprinkle of sesame seeds and green onions. Be careful on your first bite—the hot, savory soup inside bursts with every mouthful!

  • Where to Try: Yang's Dumpling (小楊生煎) for a ultra-crispy skin with rich soup, or Dahuchun (大壺春) for a traditional, semi-fermented local style.
  • Traveler Tip: Pierce a tiny hole near the top of the dumpling first to sip the delicious broth before dipping it in black vinegar!

Shanghai Food #2 Xiaolongbao

While Shengjian Bao is pan-fried, Xiaolongbao is delicate and steamed to perfection! Wrapped in paper-thin dough, these iconic Shanghainese dumplings lock in a steaming, rich pork broth inside. Many local eateries offer creative modern twists, with Crab Roe Xiaolongbao (蟹黃小籠包) remaining the absolute fan favorite.

  • Traveler Tip: Gently lift the dumpling by its top knot, bite a tiny hole to sip the savory soup first, then dip it in black vinegar with shredded ginger for the ultimate bite!

Shanghai Souvenirs #1 Shanghai Cold Cream

Shanghai Cold Cream has long topped the list of Shanghai souvenirs. The cream comes in a variety of fragrances, like osmanthus, orchid, and lavender, and its metal tin packaging is a little time capsule of old Shanghai. In the last century, it epitomized the refined taste of Shanghai women; today, it's become a must-buy souvenir for independent travelers. The brand still sticks with its classic round metal tin, and if you're picking up gifts, there are also beautifully packaged sets to choose from.

Shanghai Souvenirs #2 Pear Syrup Candy

Pear syrup candy first came onto the scene as a traditional Chinese remedy for loosening phlegm and soothing coughs. Made by slowly simmering pears and sugar, it boasts a history of more than 1,300 years. You’ll find plenty of little shops in Yu Garden selling it. It’s not just a must-buy Shanghai souvenir for travelers; it’s also a favorite everyday snack among locals. If you’re exploring Shanghai on your own, don’t miss this best-selling Shanghai souvenir!

Shanghai Souvenirs #3 White Rabbit Creamy Candy

White Rabbit Creamy Candy is a childhood memory for many people, and these days lots of brands have launched co-branded products, such as White Rabbit soft-serve, milk tea, and even perfume. White Rabbit is made by the Shanghai Guan Sheng Yuan Food Factory, so if you're in Shanghai, we recommend taking some home. Its texture is similar to toffee: firm before it goes in your mouth, softening with warmth, and delightfully chewy. Even today, White Rabbit remains one of the most beloved candies around and is a quintessential Shanghai souvenir.
