4 adults currently in the middle of our stay here...we leave on the 10th June. The first night and day we were so happy to have booked this (a special treat for my 40th birthday and belated honeymoon). Reception and check in was smooth, we were shown our rooms (the other couple got fruit and wine...we had only soft drinks in our room which was a little hiccup.) Day 1 despite not being able to get a sunbed at any pool or on the beach we had the most delightful food at Candia restaurant in the evening on my birthday. We did find our first day hard...everything is a qr scan...all menus, directories, map etc...you do have to figure everything out for yourself...and the rest of the time you get revered to concierge. there's also no info on hotel entertainment either...it makes things hard to plan. Day 2 On check in we were told we could book the other 2 restaurants for our dinners..by day 2 EVERY RESTAURANT is fully booked. The main restaurant is lovely, the food is delicious but it's not the same as a restaurant experience where you can dress up for dinner and enjoy the time with loved ones. The eception just told us that the hotel is very busy and that was that...there was a real lack of empathy. It feels like the main directive is to make it as hard as possible for guests to fully take advantage of what is advertised on the website. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a 2 restaurants policy per room. Had we known that you need to book 3 weeks in advance, we would have but even prior emails to the hotel before we arrived took a few days to be replied to. The hotel is beautiful, well maintained and the restaurant and bar staff are all wonderful but I doubt we would recommend it to others...far from relaxing, it's been quite hard work.

I celebrated a significant birthday on a 7 night stay with a large group of friends and relatives (17 people in total, 13 x aged young 50+ and 4 x aged 20 somethings) at Aldemar Knossos Royal and it was the perfect place. I made contact with Mr Ilias Papadomickelakis, the Guest relationships manager prior to travelling to ensure they would be able to accommodate my group, as I know it is not always easy to accommodate large groups and also to allow us to dine together for my birthday and on another few evenings. Ilias was so helpful and accommodating and he assured me that he would try to accommodate us as much as possible. I asked if the restaurants offered a good range of gluten free meal options as myself and 3 other members of my party had coeliac disease and required gluten free meals. I also requested a gluten free birthday cake and was prepared to pay for it if necessary. I was assured that there would be a good range of gluten free meal options in all the restaurants and that was me experience during the holiday. I was provide with a gluten free cake for my actual birthday celebration and we were allocated a section of the Artemis (Greek Taverna) restaurant for my birthday celebration. I wanted advise and suggestions on how I could pre-arrange a day excursion/trip with my group, so we could all get out the resort and have a fun activity together and Ilias suggested a local tour operator and put me in contact with Fivos Travel who arrange a site seeing late morning tour of the Minoan Palace and an afternoon sailing on a yacht with lunch. The tour was not to everyone's taste as it felt a little too long but everyone really enjoyed the yacht and the crew was absolutely great and the food they prepared was really delicious. Everyone really loved the resort even a member of my party who had mobility difficulties and was initially worried about taking the trip with me, but she was picked up and transported to all the restaurants and other areas in the resort as required on the golf buggies which was also available to anyone else if requested. I particularly enjoyed the sense of space, as nowhere felt crowded, there was several pools, so there was always sunbeds available and each accommodation area had its own assigned pool as well as the 2 main pool areas. My room was a ground floor sea front room with beautiful sea views and it was amazing. We were initially offered a first floor room in the same block but the balcony was tiny and the ground floor room which I had originally requested had a large patio and it was much better for us. I would like to thank Ilias and all the staff at Aldemar Knossos who took care of me and my group and made my special birthday celebration such a great occasion and left us with such fond memories. We had the most fantastic holiday here. The pools are great and the beach is beautiful. The sand is however not soft sand but quite gritty and we didn’t go in to swim as there are quite a few rocks in the water. I was initially a bit worried about this resort as there are a lot of steps everywhere and I struggle sometimes with this. However after speaking to the reception staff who are very friendly they put our accommodation behind reception which meant there was a ramped path and it was on the same level as the restaurant and reception and the top pool. If you struggle with mobility I would suggest you tell them otherwise you will have alot of steps to get up to the restaurant, top bar and pool and restaurant. The beach is through the resort down steps or if you struggle with steps there is a path at the side of the resort which you can walk down or back up to your accommodation so to eliminate the steps. The hotel staff are so friendly and helpful. The hotel manager Nikos was always in the restaurant at meal times and because I have dietary requirements, gluten and dairy free the chef was more than happy to cook fish, chicken, potatoes and vegetables all separate to the main buffet. I couldn’t really eat any of the buffet apart from fries, the salad bar and the occasional fried fish. If you have dietary needs speak to the staff they are very helpful- they did have gluten free bread on request. My only suggestion is they need gluten free and dairy free cake options and maybe some vegan ice cream (my husband would have been happy about this) and more fruit as someone who loves fresh fruit it was mainly melon I was a little disappointed. Overall my experience was a good one but if you do have mobility issues or dietary needs inform the staff prior to arrival.
