I have stayed at the Borrowdale Hotel several times in the last dozen years. It is still very good, but one or two changes prevent a five-star rating. The dining-room has suffered a refurbishment. I preferred it as it was before. Some of the comfortable chairs have been replaced by uncomfortable banquette seating (bring a cushion). Gone are the nice tablecloths; gone is the excellent (homemade?) marmalade, replaced by the usual tiny glass pots; the kippers disappeared long ago. A dinner, bed and breakfast package would be more accurately called a bed, breakfast and partial dinner package. In the past the daily four-course table d'hote menu was included. Now one is given an allowance of £40 towards the price of dinner, but this is unlikely to cover the full cost. Soup is £8, other starters £9-15; desserts are £9; there are a very few main courses offered at £22 or less; most are £26-40. There is a daily three-course offering at £40, but it may not always appeal. It would be better if the dinner-allowance more closely reflected the restaurant prices, so that a mid-range dinner was in fact covered. Full payment is demanded before arrival. Nevertheless, everything is spotlessly clean, the bedrooms are nice, and the staff are all extremely pleasant, helpful and efficient. Cath and Nora in the dining-room deserve special praise.
