Many years ago when we drive up Haleakala to see the sunrise, we stumbled upon Kula Lodge on the way back down. We were freezing from standing around waiting for the sun to appear so it was a lovely welcome to arrive at the Kula Lodge to friendly staff, a crackling fire and a good breakfast. Not to mention the spectacular view. So we decided to repeat the experience on our trip to Maui this year. After welcoming the sun at the top, we drove to Kula Lodge for breakfast. We were very disappointed. Apparently the restaurant has changed hands since we last visited and man has it deteriorated. The view remains the same but nothing else. We had a reservation for 5 and arrived a few minutes early. There was a bus load of tourists already there and the host told us that he was expecting another load. He said that he'd be able to seat us but we'd have to wait for all the bus passengers to be served. At least 45 minutes. Say what? That would have been nice to know before we showed up. Nevertheless, we all agreed to wait. The server did her best to keep our coffee cups full but even though we placed our food order right way, it was still almost 90 minutes before it came to the table. To top it off, it wasn't the same decent breakfast we'd had in the past. It was mediocre at best. If you're looking for a place to refuel after watching the sunrise on Haleakala, I'd suggest skipping this place. It seems they have shifted to catering to tour companies, leaving the rest of us irritated and hangry!
