Hanayura kept appearing as one of the top ryokans in Noboribetsu whilst researching, so we decided to try it for 1 night. First impressions - I thought it would be a small ryokan, but it turns out that it is more of a mid-sized establishment spanning over 8 floors. The entire ryokan is very dated; one gets the feeling that you have been transported back to the 80s. Perhaps this may have passed off as 'traditional' to some but I think it is possible to do traditional yet elegant - this just felt extremely dated. I suppose this would not be too bad if it were priced accordingly, but having paid US$600 a night, I definitely did not expect this standard. It felt more like a 3-star hotel. The main upside that the kaiseki dinner was very good, surpassing expectations. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. In short, a reasonable stay but I did not think it was value for money.
