After an extremely comfortable and welcoming stay which I enjoyed in June 2022, my expectations were high for a repeat experience. Sadly this was not to be. Nearly every aspect was significantly poorer than last year 1. Check-in My ferry docked from the Isle of Mull with insufficient time to arrive before the kitchen closed. So at the time of booking I phoned ahead and was assured that a meal could be available if I called ahead. I duly called from the ferry, only to be told this was not the case. So I was misled by reception and also I feel that since Oban is the gateway to the Hebrides, a hotel of Falls of Lora's standing should accommodate travellers arriving on evening ferries. Going the other way, the proprietors at Salen Hotel were more than happy to prepare a meal for me and keep it warm for my arrival on the Isle of Mull. 2. Bedroom Last year I had a room in the old part of the hotel which was comfortable and stylish albeit with a shared bathroom, which I don't mind. Two weeks ago I was given a room in the modern annex which was cramped and claustrophobic. The mattress was one of the softest I have ever slept on and gave no back support at all. There was poor sound proofing and I could hear people moving around in the room above. 3. Breakfast The buffet breakfast was much inferior to last year. The fruit was nothing more than tinned fruit salad, tinned orange and grapefruit segments. I asked for porridge and was surprised how quickly it arrived. I soon discovered that this was because the kitchen has stooped to the depths of providing instant porridge pots instead of making proper porridge. This is a disgrace. I asked for my scrambled eggs to be soft and buttery but was warned that they would come out of a large pan so I asked for a soft poached egg instead; when it arrived it was hard and leathery. 4. Check-out At check-out the staff, who were paid employees, unlike the very personable member of the family who helped me last year, barely looked at me and carried on with their private conversation. This is just plain rude. 5. Price Last year I paid £54.40 for my stay. This year the management have decided to exaggerate increased costs and I wa charged £93. This is an increase of 71%. 6. Conclusion At the start of this review I awarded 2*. I've now downgraded this to 1*. I think anyone reading this can see why. Please, fellow travellers, read recent reviews carefully when considering if you are prepared to be as disappointed as I was.
