Beautiful location and great service. Great seaview breakfast.

Despite being very expensive, there were no staff working when I arrived. The room had many mosquitoes and was not stocked with shampoo etc.  The owner argued with me over breakfast order even though my booking clearly stated I had paid for two breakfasts.  Lack of competition seems to have led to a complacent attitude to service, but if you stay on the island you will probably end up here.

Er is geen receptie aanwezig. Personeel van de bediening helpt je met het inchecken. De kamer aan de zee zijde was royaal maar erg gedateerd. Helaas was de vloer en spiegel niet echt schoon. Bedden waren goed. Avond eten was ook goed. Ontbijt is goed als je van een stevig ontbijt houd met spek en eieren. Geen keuze voor als je graag anders ontbijt. Hiervoor moest dus apart worden betaald, bijv. Bordje oatmeal $10, met gecarameliseerde banaan ( die er niet was ) is aardig aan de prijs. Kamer bleek na de eerste nacht niet gedaan, handdoeken niet vervangen, bed niet opgemaakt, niet opgeruimd, water niet aangevuld, wc rollen etc etc. Na een keer aangeven gebeurde er niets. Uiteindelijk om de eigenaar gevraagd die pas later in de middag terug zou zijn. Uiteindelijk heeft bedienend restaurant personeel het opgelost, super. De eigenaar gaf aan dat schoonmaakster waarschijnlijk door het carnaval al was vertrokken. Hij bood ons voor het ongemak wel een fles wijn aan. Volgende dag bij het ontbijt bleek dat wij pech hadden. De eerste 3 door ons gemaakte keuzes op de ontbijtkaart bleken niet aanwezig. Geen wafels, pancakes en/of yoghurt. Dus weer de oatmeal. ( die, ter compensatie, niet werd afgerekend ). Complimenten voor het personeel die zeer vriendelijk en oplossingsgericht aan het werk zijn! Nieuwe eigenaars zijn gestart in september 2023 en hebben nog een uitdaging.

Goed om te slapen! maar het prijsnivo past niet bij de huidige staat van de accommodatie en wat je werkelijk krijgt. Om te beginnen moet ik zeggen dat het hotel sinds Okt 2023 een nieuwe eigenaar heeft. Er moet nog heel veel gebeuren om het achterstallig onderhoud op orde te brengen. De foto's op website van diverse reisbureaus en van het hotel zijn niet realistisch met de huidige staat. Het zwembad ligt er, maar nodigt niet uit om erin te gaan. (het water is heel troebel) de ligbedjes hebben geen matrassen en de randen van het zwembad, de trap en het terras zijn alle aan het afbladderen. Er zijn geen vuilnisbakken en de tuin is slecht onderhouden. Ook het restaurant laat te wensen over. Het hotel is incl. ontbijt. Dit is dan ook 14 dagen precies hetzelfde. Geen enkele afwisseling in het brood, beleg, fruit of yoghurt. Elke dag hetzelfde op je bord. Er zijn zoveel dingen die op een simpele manier echt beter moeten. Los van de lange termijn zaken waarvan ik kan begrijpen dat die meer tijd nodig hebben. De kamers zijn overigens wel altijd netjes schoon en worden dagelijks bijgehouden. De eerste kamers zijn ze nu aan het renoveren. Hopelijk komt het snel goed. De naast liggende duikschool Scubaqua is van topkwaliteit. Daar voel je direct thuis. En ook het naast liggende restaurant "Barrelhouse", laten zien dat het wel kan op Statia. Kortom verwacht niet te veel van het hotel en geniet vooral van het Caribische klimaat, en het prachtige duiken op dit bijzondere eiland.

In de omschrijving staat dat the old gin house je t****e thuis is. Zo heeft het zeker niet gevoeld. Zowel bij de ontvangst als bij het ontbijt kon er geen vriendelijk woord vanaf. De ligging is hier perfect. Het heeft alle potentie om een t****e thuis te zijn. Wanneer ik weer terug kom voor werk is dat zeker niet hier.

Het old gin house ligt aan de oranje baai en is een van de weinige plekken waar men volop kan genieten van zon en zee in een prachtige ambiance. Het restaurant en de bar biedt een scala aan mogelijkheden om dagen op het strand te genieten van hetgeen daar allemaal geprepareerd wordt. Kortom een aanrader voor de verwende reiziger die van luieren houdt

We had an amazing week at the Gin House. The room was great, the views were spectacular, the food was delicious, the staff was so accommodating, we could not have had a better trip. Thank you to the owners for creating such an appealing destination.

We were VERY disappointed with OLD GIN HOUSE. We took a large group of divers and nondivers, including a 3 year old to stay for 7 days. Upon arriving we were informed that the pool was closed but should be ready by Wednesday or Thursday. We arrived on Saturday night and were leaving the next saturday. It was never ready. Come to find out in had been closed for weeks. If we had known this, we would have changed our plans. Because of the beautiful pictures of old gin house with a nice pool we thought that that would be great. We had a toddler with a grandma planning on helping while others were diving. We had another lady that husband dived daily and she planned on sitting by the pool and reading. We ended up buying vouchers $45.00 to go over to THE GOLDEN ROCK and swim. Paying for food and taxi while there. We went twice so it ended up being very expensive. The hotel manager sat in the dining area every day with no concern of pool situation. I feel he should have offered to pay for vouchers. Thank goodness we were able to get to the other place to swim.

We traveled to The Old Gin House with 19 other divers and used Scubaqua for the week. Our ocean view room was very clean and well maintained. Some of the common areas around the garden rooms were showing wear and tear. The pool was murky. In-room coffee involved a Nespresso machine, but each day, we asked for more pods (3 was standard) and bottled water (2 was usually standard). The on-site restaurant had good food, and the staff worked hard for our large group, but as with all places on the islands, customer patience is a virtue. Two other restaurants are within a 10 minute walk along a newly paved road in front of the hotel. The oceanside lounge area and nearby small beach were awesome. At least two grocery stores and more restaurants are in town--just ask any of the locals for directions. The hotel is recently under new ownership, so everything may get even better in the future.

The package deal arranged through Scubaqua was perfect. We were met at the ferry, and transported to the hotel without any delays. We were diving within 2 hours of our arrival on Statia. The hotel was perfect for our dive weekend. Very simple but comfortable and convenient.

I liked my stay here. Perfect by the water, historical place. We got there late at night and we had a garden room. Bed was nice and comfy and AC worked great. Big roomy open shower with rainfall shower head. Plenty of soap, shampoo, water in fridge and coffee makings in room. Windows have screens. Close to small black sand beach next to the dive shop. Nice path up to the town. They helped us with a scooter rental. Staff and owners were very nice and helpful except at their restaurant. The night we arrived we had an appetizer and drinks which were good. The next morning we were looking forward to breakfast and because my husband has allergies he asked if they could just do scrambled eggs without dairy. We were told no. So he asked for hot water and a bowl and he got something from the room that he took from home just in case. At least he could eat that. It is was disheartening to be treated that way as we travelled a long way and were staying 5 nights. There are no other places around for breakfast. So we walked up to town bought some things at the local markets instead. We tried the place for lunch one day but left as they were so unaccommodating for a simple salad for him and we were told to go up the street to the Boardwalk Café. So we did. Sad that they lost our money. We did try one more time for breakfast before we were leaving and he did manage to finally get simple scrambled eggs with no dairy. Sad that the cooks and waiters should be trained for people with allergies. Other than problems eating with allergies we did have a good time. Statia is a beautiful place. I love that its not overly touristy. The people are super friendly all over the island.

Many mosquitos in the area (November 2023) and in the rooms. Bring your own Mosquito net and a long string to fix it and protect yourselve against bites during the day. 6 out of 11 travelers of our group got dengue (lab confirmed) which can be a serious disease.

A likeable place on the harbor front, two doors down from the dive shop, and a short uphill walk to the center of Oranjestad and the historic fort. It’s a busy little neighborhood with cars and motor scooters, doves, and roosters sounding off at all hours, but it was easy to tune it all out while sleeping with the very effective air conditioning on. We wanted to be in the center of activity, and some ambient noise was a price we willingly paid. All rooms include a generous and tasty breakfast on their breezy harbor-front terrace/bar/restaurant, daily housekeeping (they keep everything very clean!), plentiful hot water, and all the usual hotel bath amenities, plus two pint bottles of drinking water daily (which we supplemented with some gallon jugs from the grocery store). We stayed in one of the two “junior apartments,” which allowed us to make most of our own meals (we shopped at Duggins’ grocery in the upper town). These consist of two spacious rooms, a living room/kitchenette and a bedroom with a comfortable king-size bed. The kitchen has a small four-burner stovetop, sink, and refrigerator, and enough dishes and cookware to make simple meals for up to three people. The apartments are not right on the oceanfront, but very close to the oceanfront terrace, which is open to guests all day and evening. A small public sand beach was steps away from the hotel, and from that beach it’s easy to snorkel along the old submerged town walls. Overall, the Old Gin House was one of the best parts of our visit to Statia.

We stayed at Old Gin House for a quick trip to Statia and really enjoyed it. Our room (garden view) didn't have any frills, but the beds were comfy, the AC was good, and the bathroom and shower were spacious. The management and staff were super nice and very helpful. The location is great and the grounds and historic character of the hotel are charming. The deck on the ocean is very peaceful. The included breakfast was delicious and generous. We also ate at the restaurant two nights and dinner was excellent. The mahi mahi was some of the best we've ever had so we got it two nights in a row. The hotel is right near the Barrel House restaurant (though we didn't go in favor of the OGH restaurant) and the Scubaqua dive shop, and just a short walk up to the fort and town. We highly recommend.
