橡樹&錨酒店(The Oak & Anchor Hotel)

Beautifully renovated old pub is stylish and polished. Nice food. Really lovely friendly staff, most of whom bent over backwards to look after us, although the hotel manager would barely lift a finger unless asked explicitly. But the rooms are a bit odd - nowhere to hang clothes but a rickety rack that fell over with 2 items on it, few power outlets, no desk or table, no shelves or drawers, only “coffee” is in horrible weak bags. But the thing that really lets them down is the bathroom. Dangerously slippery floor tiles, a shower tap you can only reach while standing under the shower head or edging around the bath, a single basin (in the honeymoon suite.) The BIG problem though is that the toilet is right out in the open. Right there as you walk in the room! In a large suite, literally no privacy, visual or sound. Imagine spending your honeymoon negotiating with your new spouse whose turn it is to leave the room while the other can take a dump. It was horrible and ruined our stay.

La chambre est lumineuse, design et cosy au 1er étage. On s’y sent bien tout de suite. Pour un long séjour, il manque de placards et la proximité des toilettes avec la chambre peut être gênante . Bon accueil et repas sympathique au restaurant en dessous. Le petit déjeuner compris se prend dans un très bon café à 100m de l’hôtel .

We enjoyed the fixed price two course menu at the Oak and Anchor. The food was nicely presented and full of flavour. The beef was perfectly slow cooked . We were really impressed with the attentive service . Bookings seemed essential. The dining area has a nice atmosphere. Although the menu is limited it is very good .

Bed 9/10, Nearly fell over seeing the open plan bathroom. Had read about it, but didn't realise everything was on view from the sitting area, just thought it was a big all in one bathroom. We went and used the loos in the restaurant a couple of times! Some things just need to be kept to yourself! Obviously not geared for anyone making a cuppa. The kettle was on the bottom of a movable trolley where 'buyable' items were in pride of place on the top shelf. Had to rearrange everything to be able to use the kettle. Would be nice if the windows could be unlocked so they could be opened especially as we couldn't sit in grounds due to Covid restrictions. Very friendly staff and food in restaurant was first rate. Not keen on filling jug and water bottles from tap beside the toilet. Realised too late we should have used the bath tap! Tiny fridge but served the purpose for milk and a couple of beers. Got the feeling it was 'use the restaurant, don't make anything (even a cuppa) in room'. Fine apart from during Covid restrictions when limits to numbers in eateries apply. Locks on entry and for rooms were annoying. Considering refurbishments have been major on other things, it shouldn't be hard to have self locking doors. Some basic tourism info would be handy, nothing about that in the compendium. I got the feeling this has been set up for people who will solely use the on site cafe/restaurant for all food and drink. Some charging points or more accessible PowerPoints would be helpful too. Design not practical al all, designer done I'd say. Lots of light from the passage comes through into room from around the door jams, distracting when trying to get to sleep. Very clean, not my cup of tea though!

Taps for shower, tub, and sink are not intuitive to use so instructions are provided, but it is still confusing

Comfortable and clean. Dinner at Sidra was excellent. The reason for four star is that the bathroom is in the same room as the bedroom-no walls. It was extremely odd.
