I can’t say enough nice things about the Apsara Residence Hotel where we stayed for 4 nights. My wife and I had a beautiful, large room, with a view of the pool right outside our window. The staff were exceptionally gracious and helpful. We very much enjoyed the Asian breakfasts which were included in the price of $70, as was airport pickup. If you wish, they will send out your laundry in the morning and return it the same day for $2/kg. After we made our reservation, they arranged for an English-speaking guide and a driver to take us and two friends for three days of tours to Angkor Wat and other temples, plus a boat ride to see the floating villages. Each day we were picked up in the morning, taken to the sites. On the first day, the main attraction was Angkor Wat, which is, of course, magnificent, one of the seven wonders of the world. All of our visits were enhanced enormously by the information provided by our knowledgeable guide, Mao Chenla. In addition to being extremely well informed about all of the sites we visited, Chenla is extremely kind. Because of my balance problems, walking on uneven terrain and climbing stairs where there is no handrail, is very challenging for me. Whenever we approached a spot where he thought I might need help, without asking he held out his arm to assist me. Our driver, Duong Seyha, was also very nice and helpful, and the van we went in was quite comfortable. Before returning us to the hotel each day, we were taken to a restaurant in the areas around the various temples for an excellent Cambodian meal. If you do plan to visit Angkor Wat and other temples in the area, I would highly recommend making tour arrangements through the hotel, and requesting Chenla and Seyha. The tours are very reasonably priced. All three days were interesting, but if you are only going to do one day, clearly the first day which included Angkor Wat was the highlight. I should mention that the tours are strenuous, with many miles of walking each day. However, despite being 73 with some physical problems, I was able to do almost everything. When we told the hotel staff we wished to see the Phare Circus, they called ahead to reserve tickets for us, and arranged a tuk-tuk to take us and pick us up at the end, for a total of $5. The circus was great fun. I would recommend arriving early to eat the dinners prepared at the various stalls and to view the pre-show. The terrific circus performance was about an hour of acrobatics and juggling. All in all, the Apsara Residence Hotel is a terrific choice in Siem Reap. Jon Taylor
