河灣旅館(River Bend Lodge)

Die River Bend Lodge, die wir durch Zufall nur im Internet gefunden haben, war der absolute Höhepunkt der Garden-Route-Reise unserer Familie (2 Erwachsene, 2 Kinder) durch Südafrika. Die äußerst geschmackvoll eingerichteten Häuser der Lodge mit Pool liegen in einem riesigen Privat-Gebiet, das an den Addo Elephant Park grenzt (und ein Teil dessen ist), in dem 200 der 600 Elefanten des Parks leben (zudem Löwen, Büffel, Nashörner, Antilopen, Strauße etc. pp.). Nur Fahrzeuge der Lodge dürfen hier das gesamte Gelände erkunden - exklusiver geht es nicht. Zwei Mal am Tag (morgens und nachmittags) werden Game Drives angeboten. Wir haben in drei Tagen 5 wahrgenommen (je 3-4 Stunden, die einem kurz vorkamen). Jedem Gast wir ein Ranger zugeteilt. Unsere Rangerin Micky war eine extrem versierte, freundliche, schlaue, kenntnisreiche und lustige Führerin durch das Buschland, die uns und unsere Kinder (die noch einen tollen Mini-Ranger-Kurs mit Zertifikat machen konnten!) mit den tollsten Details und Anekdoten über die verschiedenen Tiere bestens informierte und unterhielt - und sehr cool sogar einen Reifenwechsel inmitten einer bedrohlich nah grasenden Elefantenherde in Rekordzeit hinbekam. Das gesamte Personal der Lodge verbreitete beste Laune, serviert bestes Essen und ließ wirklich keine Wünsche offen. Uns fällt zu diesen drei Tagen in der Lodge nur ein Prädikat ein: perfekt und unbedingt empfehlenswert.

Was eine tolle Lodge! Die Lodge liegt im nicht öffentlichen Teil des Addo. Auf der Anreise ist uns direkt ein Elephant über den weg gelaufen. Wir hatten das Zimmer mit kleinen Pool! Toll! Das Personal ist einzigartig. Super freundlich, aufmerksam und hilfsbereit. Das Essen war hervorragend von der tollen Köchin Zuzu zubereitet. Am Weihnachtsabend haben wir ein kleines Geschenk erhalten. Vielen Dank an Debbie und Ihr Team.

Points positifs : - concession privée, nous étions seuls dans le parc, seuls en safari, c'était hyper agréable et relaxant - repas très bons et très copieux - personnel au petit soin - Léo, notre ranger, a été génial !!! Points négatifs : - prix entre 230 et 300 € par personne sachant que 4 d'entre nous sont arrivés en retard, un safari a dû être écourté ... vu le prix de la chambre, j'aurais apprécié que quelque chose soit proposé pour compenser ... il n'y avait que nous dans tout le parc, une petite sortie complémentaire aurait été bienvenue ... - plomberie de longhope villa complétement désuète - le problème du pourboire ... malgré une note de près de 4000 €, au bout d'une heure sur place, le cuisinier m'explique qu'il faudra que je lui laisse le pourboire en direct le lendemain car après ce n'est plus lui qui est de service etc etc ... bilan, on se retrouve à devoir verser des pourboires au cuisinier, aux aides (entre 2 et 3 en permanence dans la maison) et au ranger ... sur le principe pourquoi pas, mais du coup, chacune de leur attention semble faite dans l'espoir que le pourboire sera plus important ... cela m'a franchement mise mal à l'aise. Dans les autres lodges où nous avons été, nous avons été amenés à donner un pourboire au ranger mais jamais à toute l'équipe de restauration et de service ... finalement c'est notre ranger Léo qui a été lésé car bien qu'il ait été parfait, on a partagé la somme entre tout le monde.

Alles perfekt! Der Ranger hat uns auf den Game Drives viele Tiere und Pflanzen gezeigt und erklärt. Das Zimmer, der Service und das Restaurant waren ausgezeichnet. Wir können die Lodge sehr empfehlen!

River Bend Lodge has it all. It’s situated in a large private concession of Addo elephant park and is home to not only the big five, but also a stunning amount of birdspecies - one even more spectacular than the next. You don’t even have to leave the lodge to get up close and personal to many bird species, because the lodge’s garden is a birders paradise. Barbets, hornbills, bee-eaters, wood hoopoos to name a few all frequent the garden, giving spectacular photo opportunitites. There is a waterhole right outside the perimeter of the lodge that attrackts herds of elephant, kudu, zebra, buffalo and eland. You can admire them while being spoiled with a lavish breakfast or lunch. But the best thing is you get to go on undisturbed gamedrives with awesome guides without any disturbances or pressures. If you want to stay a lottle longer (to take photos in my case) you can just ask. If there’s something you want to see or a place you want to go, just ask and they’ll domtheur utmost. That makes a world of difference while out on safari! The staff in the lodge also all go out of their way to make you feel at home and pampered. Even when travelling alone, I felt welcome and cherished. The lodge really feels like a ‘home away from home’ and makes me want to return again and again. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable (I love the bed, the view and the airo!) and the food is fantastic. You can sit on the terrace and enjoy the night sky and the sounds of the bush while having all the comforts (and more!) of home. I love this place, can’t wait to be back!

Although we probably experienced the worst weather in 6 years, our experience of Riverbend Lodge was amazing. Leo, John, Moses, Debbie, Micky, Mike and many others made our stay very special and we were lucky enough to have seen very close up 4 of the big 5 - This was only because there are not a giraffes at the reserve. We look forward to seeing you again!

I have been lucky enough to do over twenty safari holidays in South Africa, Kenya and Namibia and without doubt the food at River Bend is among the best I have had anywhere. The service from all the team and quality of accommodation also ranks amongst the best I have ever had. However game viewing left a lot to be desired. On the Lodge’s website it states “River Bend Lodge is one of the few game reserves in the Eastern Cape where you can view the Big 5 all in one wilderness area.” I have to question this as Micky, our guide, made it clear that there are no leopards on the property. Another point to note is that although the Lodge is in the Addo National Park it is separated from the main Addo Elephant Reserve by a road and railway track. Within the area covered by the game drives from the Lodge there are, according Micky who did know her stuff, two hundred elephants as opposed to four hundred in the Main Reserve. Even those two hundred elephants were elusive enough although we did have a couple of good sightings of a couple of elephant families. There are only three lions which we did not see, the fact that off road driving is not permitted means that even though the lions are fitted with GPS trackers they are going to be very hard to get close to. There are no cheetahs, or giraffes. We did see rhino, zebra, kudo, mongooses, meerkats, warthogs, vervet monkeys, baboons, leopard tortoises and hartebeest.

Well if you want an exclusive experience this is the place for you. Hotel is set in its own private range of Addo national park We had our own wonderful guide Christiaan who’s knowledge is outside standing , he can call to the birds and they answer him , a memory I will never forget . Lots of wonderful Elephants which we had two up close experiences with the herd. the hotel is like being transported back to colonial times. Rooms are beautiful individually set chalets. Moses is wonderful host in the bar and restaurant. An part of the Eastern Cape you must visit . Well worth the drive and money .
