A day trip to Johor Bahru, Singapore: How to explore Tan Hiok Nee Old Street

A 10-15 minute walk from the border crossing is Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, a small but charming cultural street that you can explore in about 3 hours. After taking photos in front of the iconic red house, we headed straight to the famous Three Sisters Tea Restaurant! We ordered four main dishes, drinks, and some snacks. The signature salted egg fried kway teow, seafood braised rice noodles, and chili pan mee were all pretty good. We also tried "rojak" (p7), a mixture of fried dough sticks, vegetables, and fruits, seasoned with peanut sauce, chili sauce, and fish sauce (?). The addition of fish sauce was a bit unusual… but still acceptable. The meal only cost about 60 rupees per person, incredibly cheap compared to Singapore. However, beware of the red bean smoothie (p8) – it's loaded with artificial coloring! After a satisfying meal, we started browsing the street shops (p9-12). The boutiques here have their own unique character, with distinctive little elements. The street itself is quite small, but it's clean, and there are cafes to rest in if you get tired. It's a slight regret that I didn't have time to try the very popular Hsieh Yu Bakery here; wood-fired bread would make a great souvenir.
