Zhong Nanshan’s Ancient Tree That Has Witnessed a Millennium

Many years ago, I visited the Gu Guanyin Zen Temple, mostly drawn by the 1,400-year-old ancient ginkgo tree personally planted by Emperor Li Shimin (Tang Taizong). The green leaves have their own vigor, the yellow leaves their own splendor, and each season offers a different feeling. This time, when I went, most of the leaves had already fallen, but standing under the ancient tree, its profound history was still palpable. 1⃣ The temple was originally built during the Tang Dynasty’s Zhenguan period (628 AD). It was initially the royal palace residence of Prince Yong’an and later converted into a Buddhist temple, with a history of nearly 1,400 years. Despite enduring wars and damage over the centuries, it still retains the simple architectural style of the Tang Dynasty. Located at the foot of Zhongnan Mountain, besides the ginkgo tree, the temple itself is a great place for peaceful meditation and practice. The layout of the halls, bell and drum towers, and monks’ quarters is meticulous, surrounded by towering ancient trees that instantly calm the mind and allow one to feel the tranquility and harmony of Buddhism. 2⃣ This ginkgo tree is said to have been planted by Tang Taizong Li Shimin himself and is about 1,400 years old. Every late autumn (usually from late October to late November), the huge canopy turns golden yellow, dazzling and magnificent. When the autumn wind blows, golden leaves fall like rain, covering the ground with a thick “golden carpet,” creating a stunning scene that beautifully complements the ancient temple architecture. Spring under the tree: There is an ancient spring beneath the ginkgo tree that flows year-round, clear and sweet. The spring water nourishes the roots, allowing the ancient tree to remain lush and thriving after a thousand years. This spring is also called the “Guanyin Divine Spring,” adding a sense of Zen and spirituality. 3⃣ This visit coincided with the autumn holiday, and many elementary school students from out of town were there. Even arriving close to 4 PM, there was still a line. 📝 Tips to note: 🍀 Address: Luohandong Village, Dongdajie Street, Chang’an District, Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province 🍀 Opening hours: Open year-round, usually from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. 🍀 Best time to visit: Viewing the ginkgo: From late October to late November each year, when the ginkgo leaves are the most yellow and the scenery is at its most beautiful. This is also the peak tourist season, so be sure to book in advance. Other seasons: Spring and summer are lush and green, winter offers serene snow scenes, each with its own charm and fewer visitors, making it better for quiet exploration. 🍀 How to book: Make a real-name reservation through the WeChat public account “Zhongnan Chanyun” or the official mini-program “Gu Guanyin Zen Temple.” 🚩 Remember: No entry without a reservation during peak season. 🍀 Admission: Free. 🍀 Public transportation: 1. Exit B of Weiqu South Station on Metro Line 2, transfer to bus 734 and get off at Nanshi Village Station, then walk about 10 minutes to the temple. 2. Or take bus 921 or 333 to Guanzhong Ring Line Nanshi Village Station and walk to the temple. 3. By car: Navigate to “Gu Guanyin Zen Temple.”
