古麓山寺坐落在嶽麓山的古樹叢中，是湖南省最古老的寺廟之一。歷史悠久，始建於西晉泰始四年，初名為慧光明寺，唐初改名為麓山寺。該寺左臨清風峽，右飲白鶴泉，前瞰赫曦丹楓、長島湘流，后倚禹碑風雲、深壑林海。有“漢魏最初名勝，湖湘第一道場”之譽，現為全國重點佛教寺院。

千年寶剎麓山古寺傳承的是另一番人生哲理。此寺為湖南地區最早的佛寺，見證着佛教入湘的歷史。麓山寺建成之時，正值西晉初期，距離漢明帝下詔在洛陽修建白馬寺僅過去 200年而已。因此，在麓山寺的山門兩邊，有一副“漢魏最初名勝，湖南第一道場”的對聯。麓山寺山門。繼開山祖師竺法崇之後，麓山古寺又得到了導、法愍等高僧的加持，逐漸名揚四海。
