I was lucky enough to spend a whole day at Büyükada Island. Sometimes the huge city of Istanbul can be overwhelming and a day trip to these islands can be exactly what you need. My main destination on my trip here was the Agia Yorgi Church and Monastery which dates back to the 6th century. I would recommend getting a horse ride up, but the walk down is beautiful. Any Cafe along the shore will serve up the freshest fish - don't even worry about missing the last ferry out. Prices for hotels here are reasonable despite there only being a few.

A beautiful island, lots of places to eat, have a cup of coffee, walk across the island, or take a carriage. It is very serene once you are few minutes away from the seaport.

The Prince's Islands are an amazing escape away from the city; a place where "time stood still" in the best possible way. Almost all of the beautiful 20th and 19th century Victorian and Art Deco houses have been preserved, and all forms of automobiles are banned on the island, creating an amazingly tranquil and serene atmosphere. Great for biking (renting one for the whole day costs just 10 TL), walking, and discovering Istanbul's historical diversity as many of Istanbul's historical Greek, Armenian, and Jewish minorities once lived here (and still continue to do so).

Discover Istanbul's calmer cousins, these nine islands which are about 1.5 hours' ferry ride from the city centre. From the moment you walk off the boat, you'll be stepping back in time and if it's summertime, an ideal escape from the stifling heat and noise of Istanbul. Cars aren't permitted, so the only way of getting around is on foot, by horse and cart or on a push bike - bike rentals are plentiful. The islands take their name from the Byzantine era, when princes lived here in exile. It was also where Leon Trotsky settled for a period, following his deportation from Russia in 1929. Don't miss the really handsome Ottoman-era mansions.

I really wish I had a chance to spend some time on the islands themselves, but even from the water they are beautiful!
