We took advantage of free Friday nights at the museum. You must still reserve your tickets in advance and they go fast. I have mixed feelings about this museum. I really like some of the art and if there is a particular exhibition you want to see, definitely go. The roof top offers beautiful views of New York.

The Whitney Museum of American Art WMAA, also known informally as the Whitney, is an art museum located in Manhattan. As an outstanding institution dedicated to the art of the United States, the Whitney Museum of American Art presents the full range of twentieth-century and contemporary American art with a special focus on the works of living artists. Whitney is engaged in the collection, preservation, interpretation and exhibition of American art, and his collection, perhaps the best in the history of twentieth-century American art in the world, is a key resource of the museum.Whitney focuses on 20th and 21st century American art. His permanent collection includes more than 21,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, films, videos and new media artifacts by more than 3,000 artists. It focuses on exhibiting works by living artists for its collection, as well as maintaining an extensive permanent collection containing many important works from the first half of the last century. The museum's annual and biennial exhibitions have long been a venue for younger and lesser-known artists whose work is on display there. The Museum's signature exhibition, the Biennial, is the nation's leading overview of recent developments in American art. Innovation has been a hallmark of Whitney since the beginning. It was the first museum dedicated to the work of living American artists and the first New York museum to present a major exhibition of a video artist (Nam June Paik in 1982). Figures such as Jasper Johns, Su Tumbley and Cindy Sherman received their first retrospective reviews at the Whitney Museum. The museum consistently bought the works during the year they were created, often long before the artists were widely recognized.
A great plus is that the floors here are not vast or extremely complicated like museums tend to be. So a visit here can be broken up to a more bite size experience (even for kids). In addition the balconies provide fresh air, great views of the city, art and the Hudson river.
Enjoyed the impressive art collection. The excellent and detailed art narratives provide background that enhances the experience. The outdoor terraces offer great views
