2026 Guangzhou Airport Overview: Insider Updates from a Frequent Flyer

I’ve personally watched Baiyun Airport constantly upgrade and expand over the years. Following its relocation in 2004, the airport has been in full-on expansion mode. Late 2025 marked a historic milestone for CAN with the opening of the massive Terminal 3 (T3) and a fifth runway.

I can confirm that the airport is busier and better connected than ever. By December 2025, passenger throughput shattered records, surpassing 80 million annual passengers. It now serves over 100 international and regional destinations, cementing its status as China's premier southern gateway.

Guangzhou Airport Terminal Map: 2026 Layout & Crucial Updates

If you haven't flown through Guangzhou recently, please pay close attention to this.

🚨 Urgent 2026 Update: Terminal 1 is Closed!
As of January 22, 2026, following the successful transition of flights to the new facilities, Terminal 1 (T1) officially closed to undergo extensive upgrades and renovations in alignment with the airport's Phase III expansion plan.

From 2026 onwards, please DO NOT go to the old T1. Whenever I fly out of CAN now, I make it a strict habit to double-check my ticket to confirm whether my flight departs from T2 or T3.

Here is how the terminals are currently structured:

  • Terminal 2 (T2): Opened in 2018, this ultra-modern terminal is my usual go-to since it serves as the flagship hub for China Southern Airlines, as well as China Eastern and several others. It boasts an incredible selection of premium dining, duty-free shopping, and excellent VIP lounges.

  • Terminal 3 (T3): Fully operational since early 2026, this is the spectacular new home for international routes and select domestic carriers (including Hainan Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, and Spring Airlines). T3 handles flights for around 30 global carriers.

Transferring Between Terminals:
Transferring is seamless. I usually rely on the free 24-hour shuttle bus that loops between the operational terminals and parking zones every 10 to 30 minutes, or I hop on the intercity train connecting the transit hubs.

Getting To & From Guangzhou Airport: Metro, Rail & Taxi Guide

Over the years, I've tried every transport option available. Here is my breakdown of the best ways to get to the city centre:

1. Subway (Guangzhou Metro Line 3)

Guangzhou Airport to the City Centre by Metro
  • My Experience: This is the most reliable option to avoid Guangzhou's infamous rush-hour traffic. It takes me about 40–50 minutes to reach Tiyu Xilu in the city center.
  • Locations: Airport North Station (T2) and the newly integrated T3 transit hub.
  • Operating Hours: Trains run from roughly 06:00 AM to past midnight (around 00:08 AM).

2. Intercity Rail (New for T3)

Guangzhou Airport | Intercity Rail
  • My Experience: Since T3 opened, I absolutely love the Guangzhou East Ring Intercity Railway. The station (Baiyun Airport East Station) is directly linked to T3's Transport Centre. Express trains zip you to Guangzhou Baiyun Station in just 39 minutes.

3. Taxis & Ride-Hailing

Guangzhou Airport Online Car Hailing
  • Locations: You'll find well-organized official taxi stands outside T2 (P8 Parking) and T3 (Gate 72 / P12 Parking).
  • Rates: The starting fare remains 12 CNY for the first 3 km, and 2.6 CNY per kilometer thereafter. I always remind travelers: if you land late (11:00 PM to 5:00 AM), expect a 30% late-night surcharge.

Red-Eye Flights: Late-Night Transport Options at Guangzhou Airport

I’ve landed on plenty of red-eye flights, and CAN’s late-night transportation never lets me down. If I miss the last metro, I head straight to the 24/7 Transport Centre. You can grab an official taxi, rent a car, or catch one of the late-night Airport Express buses (like the Night 87 or 8B routes) that drop you right into the heart of the city.

Guangzhou Airport Facilities: Duty-Free, SIM Cards & Insider Tips

  • Connectivity: Need a local SIM? My go-to spot is the customer service centers in the T2/T3 arrivals halls. They verify your ID and activate the card instantly. There are also self-service kiosks if you prefer to handle it yourself.

  • Souvenirs & Duty-Free: If you want last-minute gifts, the specialty shops offer amazing Lingnan treats. I always grab some almond cakes and traditional Cantonese cured meats before boarding. Plus, the newly expanded duty-free stores in T3 offer frequent promotions on premium cosmetics and spirits.

Got a few hours to spare? Don't just sit at the gate. Here is where I like to spend my time:

Airport Culture & Tourism Town - A Hipster Haven

Located at Gaozeng Metro Station (just one stop away on Line 3). It’s completely free to enter and filled with chic cafes and aerospace-themed art galleries. It’s my favorite spot for a quick, Instagram-worthy coffee break between flights.

Guangzhou Sunac Land - A Ski Lover’s Paradise

Just 20 minutes (15 km) from the airport. Hot Snow Miracle is the largest indoor ski resort in South China. Hitting a crisp -6°C indoor slope while it's sweltering outside in Guangzhou is a surreal, must-do experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need to arrive early at CAN?

Absolutely. With the T1 closure and operations shifted to the sprawling T2 and T3 complexes, I always arrive at least 2.5 to 3 hours before my flight. Navigating the new expansions takes a bit of extra walking, and you don't want to be rushed.

2. Are there good duty-free shops?

Yes! The duty-free zones, especially in the brand-new T3, are world-class. You can find everything from high-end liquor and electronics to exclusive luxury cosmetics.

3. Can I sleep at the airport?

Yes. CAN operates 24/7 and has dedicated sleeping zones and paid sleep pods. However, for a truly restful night, I highly recommend booking the Pullman or Novotel nearby—the added comfort is worth every penny.
