海岸巨浪小屋(Beachcomber Lodge)

I recently stayed at the Beachcomber Lodge on Lord Howe Island and it was fantastic. The rooms were nice and simple, just right for a relaxing island vacation. Everything was clean and I had everything I needed. The location was also great, nestled close to the beautiful and secluded Ned's Beach, offering quick access to a tranquil spot for relaxation or a quick swim. But what really made my stay special was Gary, the owner of the lodge. He picked me up from the airport, gave me a tour, and was always there to help out. The hospitality offered by Gary and his family was very welcoming. The main stores are just a short walk away from the lodge, but you might find a rental bike handy to explore the island more widely. Beachcomber Lodge is a great place to stay!

The lodge is located, like many in Lord Howe Island, up a hill which requires hiring a bicycle or a 10 to 15 minute walk to get to the restaurants to eat or beaches to swim. There are no views from the rooms or the lodge, but they do have a very nice garden. The room was typical average Lord Howe basic / minimal - not unattractive, but very basic. It was generally clean. Like almost all accommodation on Lord Howe, there is no airconditioning, and given the constant high humidity on the island, staying in the room during the day is mostly unbearable. On the downside, the bathroom smelled of sewerage (septic tanks?), the basin constantly clogged up with water (did not drain), there was no facecloth provided, the TV signal was hopelessly fuzzy (though Youtube worked fine), and sound came in from the adjacent rooms, moreso than any other hotel I have ever stayed in. The accommodation would be very expensive compared to other accommodation of this standard in Australia ... but perhaps not so for Lord Howe, where everything is about 50% more than the mainland.

Prepaid $5K via Oxley Travel to secure 2 x 1 bd cottages at Beachcomber Lodge for a total of 5 nights. Unfortunately QANTAS cancelled our flights on three occasions to LHI (Oct 2022) and therefore we were unable to utilize or prepaid accommodation. Understandably guest who were unable to depart LHI were staying in our prepaid rooms, and likely paying some category of tariff to Beachcomber. Requested Gary from Beachcomber consider issuing us a partial refund or even a partial travel credit (to be used in non peak period) but to no avail. We were not seeking a full refund., nor even 50%. Have stayed at LHI previously, but this is an expensive lesson. Ensure you have adequate travel insurance (even though it is domestic travel), as QANTAS does cancel flights to LHI and Beachcomber will not offer any sort of remedy. Time for my family to find a new destination. Glen

The stay was fine, its pretty basic so dont expect anything too flash but it does the job. Service was good here, not a lot of internet though! We came to LHI for our honeymoon and I would say the trip was a disaster. Couldn't get restaurant bookings & experienced rude hospo staff, it was hard to find fresh food (the island was running out of food due to the barge being turned around), we missed the Mt Gower climb due to a delayed flight by 1 day, fishing boats were broken & not going out, Balls Pyramid boat was cancelled on the day. BE PREPARED if you choose LHI for your next holiday destination.

Very comfy bed, everything works, well equipped (including the kitchenette) and a few extra nice touches you don't find at other places in this price range on Lord Howe (e.g. toiletries, tea/coffee/sugar/milk). Staff is very accommodating, more than happy to change out towels, take you to dinner each evening, pretty much anything you need. There is no mobile service on the island but the (paid) wifi here works very well, And there is a free Telstra phone booth right outside to call and make dinner bookings or schedule activities. I saw a recent review that seemed to be oblivious to the fact that this a small (and very hilly) island and you have to consider that when booking. I think Beachcomber does very well in this environment, but do research Lord Howe before heading off and make sure it's the right holiday for you.

Beachcomber was perfect for my stay… a great little kitchenette to prepare easy meals if you want a quick brekkie before a hike… close to Ned’s… clean… Paul was always around to help with anything… would definitely stay again!

Lovely low-key accommodation in a beautiful garden setting. The rooms are modern and comfortable, with a well-equipped kitchen. The small number of rooms at the lodge added to the calm and relaxed feel. Our host Paul was so friendly and helpful, meeting us at the airport and providing us with a tour of the island and taking us to various locations for dinner each evening. The lodge is a little further out from the town, but we hired bikes for our stay which made getting around easy.
