Escape the crowds and head to Ledong, Hainan’s “hidden corner,” to find a slow-paced mountain and sea time

Ledong is located in the southwest of Hainan Island—Ledong Li Autonomous County. It’s like a treasure quietly tucked away, boasting magnificent mountains and seas that rival anywhere else, while preserving the purest slow lifestyle rhythm. This guide is my sincere advice based on my own trip to Ledong. Day 1: Venture into the “First Garden at the End of the Earth” and feel the breath of Jianfengling Half of Ledong’s essence lies in Jianfengling National Forest Park. I suggest dedicating most of your first day here. Don’t sleep in before you go; start early because the mountain weather changes quickly and mornings are usually fresher. Once you enter the mountain, you’ll know what a “natural air-conditioned room” means. Towering ancient trees break sunlight into scattered patches, and the air is filled with the fresh scent of earth and plants. Take a deep breath, and you’ll feel your lungs being cleansed. This is no ordinary hill; it’s one of the largest and best-preserved tropical primary rainforests in China. The climb is a bit tiring, but when you stand atop the main peak and see the sea of clouds rolling beneath your feet, with the distant mountains and sea connected in one breathtaking view, you’ll feel every drop of sweat was worth it. The awe you experience can’t be captured by photos. Remember to wear comfortable, non-slip shoes, bring enough water and some snacks, and take your time walking and observing. You’ll discover many interesting plants and small insects, feeling like an explorer. After descending, you’ll definitely be hungry. At this time, you must try Ledong’s most authentic dish—Huangliu old duck. Find a small local restaurant frequented by residents and order a plate of white-cut old duck. The duck meat is firm and chewy, dipped in a special sauce whose aroma still makes my mouth water just thinking about it. Pair it with a bowl of refreshing winter melon and sea conch soup, and all the day’s fatigue will instantly be cured. Day 2: Romance of the West Coast and Li ethnic culture On the second day, change the pace and experience Ledong’s sea and culture. In the morning, drive to Yinggehai Salt Field. This is definitely a unique scenic spot in Ledong! The endless salt pans look like a spilled palette, each grid showing white, pink, and light blue colors under the sun, creating a dreamy scene. Wear brightly colored clothes, and every photo you take will look like a masterpiece. Watching the salt workers labor gives you a direct understanding of “every grain is hard-earned.” The sea breeze here carries a salty scent, completely different from the mountain air yesterday. In the afternoon, if time allows, visit Baisha River Valley or nearby Li ethnic villages. These places are undeveloped, allowing you to see the most authentic Li life. The ancient boat-shaped houses and exquisite Li brocade carry the long history and culture of this ethnic group. Chat with local grandmothers (if you can communicate), and you’ll be touched by their simple, genuine smiles. At dusk, be sure to time your visit to Longmuwan. Known as the “most beautiful sunset beach,” it’s no exaggeration. Because Ledong is on the west coast, you can witness the magnificent sight of the sun fully setting into the sea horizon. When the sunset dyes the entire sea and beach golden, you and your shadow will be immersed in this gentle warmth—a feeling of extreme romance. Some thoughtful tips: · Transportation: Ledong’s attractions are quite spread out, so self-driving is the most convenient. Renting a car from Sanya or Haikou and driving over offers great scenery along the way. · Accommodation: You can choose to stay near Jiusuo New District or Huangliu Town, where dining and shopping are convenient. If you want to see the sea, there are some resorts around Longmuwan as well. · Food: Besides Huangliu old duck, Ledong’s tropical fruits are a must-try! Mangoes, dragon fruit, papayas—sweet and cheap, you can enjoy fruit freedom! Also, various fresh seafood cooked in the simplest ways tastes incredibly delicious. · Mindset: When you come to Ledong, please slow down your pace. It’s not a place full of trendy check-in spots; its beauty requires you to calm your mind, see with your eyes, listen with your ears, and feel with your body and soul. In short, Ledong is a place where you can truly relax and have a dialogue with the mountains, sea, and your inner self. Have a great trip!
