The wind in Songshan carried the scent of pine. After walking through temples and pagoda forests for half a day, my heart had calmed down. Checking the time, we decided to drive directly to Longmen Grottoes – a place I had always longed to visit. Compared to the solemnity of Shaolin Temple, its charm felt more like "murals sculpted by time itself." 🚗 Driving: Crossing the foot of Songshan Mountain to the Grotto World by the Yi River We got in the car at the Shaolin Temple parking lot and drove north out of Songshan, then onto the Lianhuo Expressway, heading towards Luoyang. The road conditions were excellent; the transition from mountains to plains took less than ten minutes, the landscape changing rapidly. After about an hour, the outline of the city began to appear, and Longmen Grottoes, located south of Luoyang, beside the Yi River, came into view. As the car approaches, the road suddenly widens on both sides—at that moment, you realize, "The trip is about to get to the main event." Route: Shaolin Temple → Dengfeng City → Lianhuo Expressway → Southern Section of Luoyang City → Longmen Grottoes Driving Time: Approximately 70–85 minutes Parking: Large parking lot available at the Longmen Grottoes Visitor Center 🕒 Longmen Grottoes in the Afternoon: The sense of history sculpted from stone is so close you can almost feel it breathing. Upon entering the scenic area, the first thing you see is the West Hill Grottoes. It's almost an entire mountainside, densely engraved with history: large and small caves, niches, flying apsaras, bodhisattvas, as if time has collectively paused for a moment. The light shines from the west, illuminating the stone's texture, giving it an expression softer than rock. 🕍 Fengxian Temple: The moment you see the Vairocana Buddha, time suddenly slows down. Turning a narrow path, the view suddenly opens up. The Vairocana Buddha sits there quietly, the grandeur of the Tang Dynasty evident in its features. I stood at the very front of the steps for a while, just waiting for the tourists to disperse slightly. Those ten-odd seconds of emptiness were especially precious. You could clearly see the gentle curve of her lips, You could clearly see the lines of her earlobes as smooth as real skin, and feel a strange tranquility. Some say the Vairocana Buddha resembles Wu Zetian; Some say it's the ideal profile of a Tang Dynasty woman; But standing before it, you feel that "who it resembles" is no longer important, It is the Tang Dynasty itself—confident in its golden age, immense in scale, and gentle in its presence. 🏞️ Crossing the bridge to Dongshan: The best angle is looking back. If you still have energy, I strongly recommend walking to Dongshan. Not to see more, but to see "from afar." Standing on the opposite bank of the Yi River, the entire Xishan Grottoes spread out like a honeycomb, the sunlight shining on the Buddha's shoulders, bathing the entire rock face in warm hues. This angle makes you realize that these Buddhas weren't carved in isolation, but existed alongside the entire mountain, the entire river, and the entire era. The East Mountain has far fewer tourists than the West Mountain, and it's much quieter. I sat here for five minutes, watching the wind make the Yi River shimmer in layers, watching the crowds on the opposite bank become tiny dots. At that moment, you realize that this kind of travel doesn't need much planning; it's meant to be experienced slowly. 🎒 Tips: The Longmen Grottoes are most beautiful in the afternoon, when the carvings appear more three-dimensional under the soft light. The trail is about 3-4 kilometers long and not difficult, but light shoes are recommended. Fengxian Temple is quite crowded; it's best to wait a while for a clearer environment for taking photos.
