Sankeien Garden was opened to the public on May 1, 1906 (Meiji 39) by Hara Sankei, a businessman who made his fortune through raw silk trading. Historically valuable buildings that were relocated from Kyoto and Kamakura are cleverly arranged within the garden, which covers an area of 175,000 m2. (Currently, there are 10 Important Cultural Properties and 3 Yokohama City Designated Tangible Cultural Properties.) Sankei began developing the vast land in Honmoku, southeast of Yokohama, overlooking Tokyo Bay, around 1902 (Meiji 35), and completed the outer garden in 1914 (Taisho 3) and the inner garden in 1922 (Taisho 11). During Sankei's lifetime, the garden also served as a place to nurture and support up-and-coming artists, and many representative works of modern Japanese painting were created within the garden, such as Maeda Seison's "Mikoshi-furi," Yokoyama Taikan's "Yanai-kage," and Shimomura Kanzan's "Yoroboshi." It later suffered extensive damage during the war, and in 1953 (Showa 28), the Hara family transferred and donated it to the city of Yokohama. The Sankeien Preservation Society was then established as a foundation, which carried out restoration work on the garden, which continues to this day. #yokohama
