米德湖是位於沙漠中央巨大的淡水湖。氣候變化、持續乾旱使得科羅拉多河(Colorado River)上游分流和下流日益攀升的的水資源需求使得這片湖泊日漸乾涸，面臨沙漠化的危險。從空中鳥瞰米德湖，1985年11月 1964年米德湖國家休閑區(Lake Mead National Recreation Area)成立，並全年提供服務。區內開發了包括划船、釣魚、水橇、游泳、日光浴等多種旅遊休閑項目，同時湖岸邊多石的峭壁、沙灘等奇特的地貌也成為了探險的好去處。湖中心有許多中小島嶼，其中甚有人開創了小型植物園。

米德湖最大長度約193千米，面積約640平方公里，是美國最大的人造湖和水庫。米德湖最深約162米，蓄水量約322億立方米，比我國三峽的蓄水量少不了多少。米德湖向亞利桑那州、內華達州、加利福尼亞州和墨西哥部分地區供水，造福約2500萬人口。
