Rainy Trekking Guide: Meet the Golden Mountain at Meili Snow Mountain.
A trip to Yubeng Village is a must in life because it is a paradise for trekkers and a secluded utopia on earth. The clear blue sky reflects this quiet and beautiful village. At an altitude of 3000 meters, surrounded by mountains on all sides, it has a unique geographical environment. It is divided into upper and lower villages. The upper village leads to the climb of Kawagebo, while the lower village leads to the sacred waterfall. Along the way, you can see the ancient script and the wonder of five trees sharing one root. Trekking here is a route that many domestic trekkers yearn for. Once you come, you will understand why it is called the "paradise for trekkers."
Preparation before departure
1. Check in advance if there are any medium or high-risk areas at your departure point. Shangri-La has restrictions on some areas, so inquire in advance.
2. ID card and cash are essential (the network in the mountains is not very good).
3. Trekking shoes, outdoor waterproof pants, and a jacket (the weather is changeable, bring rain gear; the road is muddy and slippery after rain).
4. There is basically no network signal during the trek, so inform your family and friends in advance to avoid worrying them.
5. Trekking poles: There are many mountain sections, it is recommended to buy T-shaped handles, preferably two. Toiletries and disposable bed sheets (accommodation conditions in Yubeng Village are limited, so bring these items).
6. Thermos, chocolate, energy bars, and other dry food: for energy and water replenishment along the way.
7. If it's your first time trekking in Yubeng, it is recommended not to go alone. You can go with three or five friends (Yubeng is located in a remote mountain area with no direct public transportation (planes, buses, etc.), and the road conditions are very tough. For safety reasons, most travelers do not choose to travel independently but join a group from Lijiang or Shangri-La).
8. Daily medication: altitude sickness medicine; medicine for injuries; gastrointestinal medicine should be kept on hand.
Route Planning
D0: Gather in Lijiang
D1: Lijiang - Xiaozhongdian - Moon Bay - Feilai Temple
In the morning, we will set off for Feilai Temple. After passing through Xiaozhongdian, where the wind blows the grass and you can see cattle and sheep, we will enjoy the different scenery of Shangri-La. We will then continue to Benzilan for lunch. After passing through Moon Bay and Deqin County, we will reach Feilai Temple, where the Meili Snow Mountain, Kawagebo, will be right in front of you. Enjoy the tranquility of the moment!
D2: Feilai Temple - Xidang Village - Nanzheng Pass - Yubeng Village (11KM trekking)
According to the sunrise time, we need to get up early to go to the Meili Snow Mountain viewing platform to admire the rare sight of the golden mountain. After taking some impressive photos, we will drive to Xidang at 8:00 AM. From Xidang, we will start trekking into the secluded Yubeng Village. After climbing 1000 meters to Nanzheng Pass, we will descend all the way to Yubeng Village before nightfall. The simple yet distinctive Tibetan houses will appear before your eyes.
Note: If any of your companions are physically weak, they can choose to take a car from Xidang to Yubeng (about 200 yuan/person). If you need to take a car, please ensure safety and bear the costs and safety issues yourself.
D3: Yubeng Village - Xiaonong Base Camp - Ice Lake - Yubeng Village (14KM trekking)
At 8:00 AM, we will set off from Yubeng Village and trek to Ice Lake. Along the way, we will pass through the Seabuckthorn Forest at the village entrance and enter the primeval forest. We will then continue to Xiaonong Base Camp, which was the base camp for the Sino-Japanese mountaineering team climbing Kawagebo Peak. After lunch, we will continue to Ice Lake. As night falls, we will return to Yubeng Village by 6:00 PM, ending the day's trek.
D4: Yubeng - Primeval Forest - Sacred Waterfall - Yubeng (14KM trekking)
At 8:00 AM, we will cross the Yubeng River and pass through the lower village of Yubeng, with green mountains and clear waters at our feet and blue skies and white clouds above. We will then trek through the primeval forest and alpine meadows without any signs of human activity. Moving forward, we will reach the Sacred Waterfall formed by the cascading water from Meili Snow Mountain. Here, you can see the full view of the Goddess Peak and the Five-Crown Peak. More importantly, this is where pilgrims receive their baptism. Only after being baptized by the sacred water is the pilgrimage complete, purifying both body and soul. We will then return to the inn in Yubeng Village to rest.
D5: Yubeng - Ninong Gorge - Shangri-La (18KM trekking)
In the morning, we will set off around 8:00 AM and trek downhill along the Yubeng River to find Ninong Gorge. There are roadside food supply stations along the way. After lunch, we will enter the mouth of Ninong Gorge, a deep gorge surrounded by green and white clouds. This section of the road is narrow, so be careful while trekking. We will then reach the Ninong Village parking lot, where our car will be waiting for us. We will then drive to Shangri-La, where you can have a good night's sleep after several days of hard trekking.
D6: Shangri-La - Dukezong Ancient City - Prayer Wheel - Lijiang
After breakfast, we will head to Dukezong Ancient City, also known as Moonlight Ancient City or Turtle Mountain Park. It is the only ancient city in China with three names. Dukezong Ancient City is a living ancient city in Shangri-La, where you can learn about Tibetan Buddhist culture and Thangka culture. It is a city that has been alive for over 1300 years, preserving the historical traces of the ancient Tea Horse Road. It is a city full of vitality, where people live and work. It also has the largest prayer wheel, and each turn brings you good luck and health.
After the trip, we will return to Lijiang Ancient City to end the journey.
The mountain roads in Yunnan are steep and the altitude is high. It is not recommended to trek alone. It is better to join a group.
a beautiful Tibetan village in the northwest of Yunnan. up close view of the snow capped mountains.
Yubeng Village, a hidden paradise in the Himalayas. Majestic mountains, pristine waterfalls, and serene landscapes. 😘A nature lover's dream.
One of the most beautiful places I have ever visited in China. The village is surrounded by mountains and forest. There are many hikes available and you probably need 3 nights see complete them. The local people are friendly and helpful. Careful when entering the village from Xidang. I made the mistake of taking a Jeep thinking it would drop us half way as the sign said 19k to the village. turns out the route has been changed and it’s only about 7/8k. You can save 200 rmb by walking this.
Yubeng Village is worth coming, but it is not necessary if you just come to take a photo, because the distance is very far. If you want to come, it is recommended to stay for at least three days and arrange a hiking trip
Great hiking spot and nice restaurants to clear your mind. The mountain views are amazing.
Great place to stay and start local hiking tours. I would recommend to plan for 3 or 4 nights here to fully explore the surroundings.
