This fortress was originally established to guard the important strategic position of the confluence of the Mosel and Rhine rivers. It was occupied by France during the German-French War and the French Revolution. The whole fortress was hexagonal in shape and built on a cliff. The walls were surrounded by big gunholes and small openings for shooting. It was easy to attack the enemy. The whole geographical position was still superior. Side evidence of the importance of Fort Ellen Bryant Stein (oh, the name is too difficult to pronounce). The round trip cable car plus fortress ticket is 11.8 Euros.
