1. On the afternoon of May 28 this year, 11 of us visited Kaiyuan Temple in Chaozhou, located on Kaiyuan Road, Chaozhou. I visited this temple 16 years ago. This time, we had a lot of interest and harvest. 2. There are three points of view and highlights of Kaiyuan Temple in Chaozhou. "One is Kaiyuan Temple, a thousand-year-old ancient temple with a long history. The Kaiyuan Temple in Chaozhou has experienced more than 1200 years of historical baptism, and has been enjoying a vigorous fragrance. It has a story with Emperor Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty. Buddhism in China, Tang Dynasty is the most prosperous period. In the 26th year of Kaiyuan (738 AD), Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, who believed in Buddhism, built a temple in each of the ten counties and prefectures in the country under the name of the year number "Kaiyuan". Before that, there was already a Lifeng Temple in Chaozhou, so it was rebuilt and expanded and renamed Kaiyuan Temple. The Yuan Dynasty is called "Kaiyuan Wanshou Temple" and the Ming Dynasty is called "Kaiyuan Town Guochan Temple" (see figure below, 12). After the Qing Dynasty, "Kaiyuan Town Guochan Temple" and "Kaiyuan Temple" are called together, and the quota "Wanshou Palace" has been used as the Kaiyuan Temple until now. Kaiyuan Temple covers an area of 136,000 square meters and was listed as a national key cultural relics protection unit in 2001. Second, Kaiyuan Temple is built on the basis of Tang Dynasty, which is a collection of historical relics from past dynasties. The overall architectural layout and structure of the Kaiyuan Temple in Chaozhou is based on the Kaiyuan period of the Tang Dynasty, and on the basis of retaining its original structure, it continuously condenses the architectural art of the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, as well as various precious cultural relics. 1) The main building of Kaiyuan Temple is the Temple of Heavenly Kings, which is known as the "Pearl of Ancient Architectural Art". The architectural style of the Song Dynasty is very prominent. 2) A golden lacquer wood carved thousand Buddha Pagoda in the temple was built in the Ming Dynasty. 3) On the east side of the hall hangs a large copper bell cast in the Song Dynasty. It weighs more than 3 kilograms and is 1.7 meters high. The mouth of the bell is 105 centimeters high. The big copper bell has been striking every day for hundreds of years, and its sound is still melodious and intact as new. 4) The big incense burner is an exquisite cultural relic made in the Yuan Dynasty. It is 1.4 meters high and weighs 950 jin. It seems to be carved with meteorite. Third, Kaiyuan Temple is an important historical witness in the history of Buddhist exchanges between China and foreign countries. The prosperous Tang Dynasty of Buddhism had close contacts with Buddhist countries such as Japan and Korea. 1) The main hall of Kaiyuan Temple is dedicated to a red bronze tripod with a Chinese inscription - "an incense burner in Kaiyuan Temple Zen Hall, which will always support Ren Guozuo, a disciple of the three Koreas. At that time, the so-called three Koreas were Siro, Baiji and Gaogulu, which are now Korea and North Korea. Ren Guozuo was a monk from Korea to Tang Dynasty. 2) According to a textual research by contemporary ancient architecture experts, the Dongda Temple (also known as Dahua Yan Temple) in Nara, Japan was built with reference to Kaiyuan Temple in Chaozhou. Dongda Temple is a Japanese treasure listed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO. On June 2, 2017, I visited Dongda Temple with 234 Ding. This magnificent and exquisite building is shocking. (See figure below, 2) Dongda Temple was proposed by the Japanese Buddhist Emperor Saint Takeshi. It occupies a very high position in Japanese Buddhism and is the general temple of 68 national sub-temples in the country. The Tang Dynasty monk Jianzhen has been to Dongda Temple to set up altars to teach precepts and promote Buddhism. 3. After visiting Kaiyuan Temple, you can stop by the nearby Ming and Qing Paifang Street. (See figure below, 2)
