毛烏素沙漠是中國四大沙地之一，位於陝西省榆林地區和內蒙古自治區鄂爾多斯市之間，面積達4.22萬平方公里。位於北緯37°27.5′—39°22.5′，東經107°20′—111°30′。包括內蒙古自治區的鄂爾多斯南部、陝西省榆林市的北部風沙區和寧夏回族自治區鹽池縣東北部。降水較多，有利植物生長，原是畜牧業比較發達地區，固定和半固定沙丘的面積較大。萬里長城從東到西穿過沙漠南緣。
