The National Gallery of Art, located in Battenberg Square in the centre of Sofia, was built in 1934. The site was destroyed by bombing from 1943 to 1944. After the abolition of the monarchy, it moved to the site of the original Grand Palace in 1946. All the works of art were preserved, together with the Royal exhibits in the palace, in the present National Gallery.
