Jiaohe Old Town is more than ten kilometers away from Turpan. It was built in the 2nd century A.D. and is the capital of the former country of the 36-nation Chechen Division in the Western Regions. It is the most complete urban relic preserved in China for more than 2,000 years. The highest military and political organization in the Western Regions of Tang Dynasty, Anxi Du Nufu, was first established here. The site is sandwiched between two rivers and looks like an aircraft carrier, an absolutely natural military fortress. There are no walls, only the east gate and the South gate. All the buildings are rammed with earth. The northernmost end is the Temple Pagoda Forest area, with 101 Buddhist pagodas. One of the central avenues connects north and south, with residential areas in the East and workshops in the west. The overall city-pool framework is well preserved. With group tours, tour guides usually take them back to the center of the city. Free travel suggests a complete circle, a scenic spot with great taste. That sense of vicissitudes of life seems to be in Pompeii ancient city!
